RGC 35 Sale 17
Saturday 12th August 2023
It was the visitors who had the better of the opening 15 minutes as they camped in the RGC half, with the game played under the new tackle laws the penalty count was increasing minute by minute.
With the possession and territory Sale would have been disappointed not to have crossed the line, and that would have been felt even more when the Gogs opened the score with an Elis Evan try and a Sam Earl-Joens conversion.
Sale answered back with a couple of tries and a conversion to take the lead. One of the scores was from RGCs Tal Taylor wearing the Sale jersey.
RGC’s pack were making some inroads and it pushed on and grabbed the try when Charlie Probert got the touchdown before Earl-Jones added the extras.
The game was starting to open up, and the new pitch was making it a quick game. A break from Ollie Wynn set up Afon Bagshaw who floated down the field before he was tackled.
Jordon Liney was next on the scoreboard, again after the driving maul did its work. Sam Earl-Jones converted.
The ball was moving quickly through RGC hands as the backline got going. Ollie Wynn spun from the back of the scrum and evaded a few tackles to again test the Sale defence.
The gap was closed when RGC fell off a few tackles and Sale crossed on the corner to make it 21-17 but that was as close as they got.
A brace of tries from scrum-half Daf Williams pulled the Gogs away with Sam Earl-Jones and Tom Jarman conversions ending the game with a 35-17 win.
