RGC Senior Academy 36 London Welsh 7
RGC Senior Academy put in a good second-half performance against London Welsh at Caernarfon.
The opening 40 minutes was an arm wrestle with both sides looking to find that space to create openings. As expected the rustiness of a pre-season game resulted in a few errors, and a stop/start feel to the rhythm of the play.
It was the visitors that had the upper hand when it came to territory, with RGC putting in some good defensive work to keep them out and they did cross the line but were held up with a great scramble tackle.
The pressure did tell, with the London Welsh side claiming the opening try and conversion to take a 7-nil lead at halftime.
It was a different story in the second half when the Gogs opened the pitch with some quick ball, accurate kicking and an attacking maul that did some damage.
6 tries were scored by RGC in the 40 minutes and London Welsh were unable to answer back.
Head Coach Ceri Jones
“In fairness, I think the first half set the foundations for the game, as we played up the hill and against the wind so we dug in when we needed to”
“I thought the boys grafted and we did ask for more urgency and speed with some aggression at half time and that was delivered.”
We made some changes at halftime and would like to thank Shay Lewis for coming up and playing the scrum-half role for us, and he added some speed in the game. Delwyn Jones came on and he brought that direct running.
With a number of young boys stepping up today, they will also learn from this 80-minutes.
Overall, we can be happy with the first run-out and the result, against a plucky London Welsh Side and we can take this onto our game next Saturday vs Sale”
