Newport Claim The Win

Newport 43 RGC 17

Saturday 10th February 2024

Newport continued their winning run and headed into 2nd place on the league after a convincing 7 try win.

RGC were winning the scrum battle early doors, with a couple of penalties and the away side to advantage with the first kick and points from Sam Earl-Jones.

The Gogs were then having to defend as the homeside looked to get back into the game, but some good work around the breakdown kept them out.

Errors from both sides made the tempo of the game slow, with a couple of loose lineouts and a kick out on the full from RGC giving Newport field position.

Newport kept on the pressure on the RGC tryline, and they finally broke through when hooker Henry Palmer drove over the whitewash.  Conversion was successful from Matt O’Brien.

Minutes later it was the Gogs that claimed the try when Dion Jones collected a pass, and the space was open for him to run in for the try. Sam Earl-Jones was on target with the extras.

Newport went straight back into attack, but were held up on the line but again were having the better of possession for long spells.

All RGC could do was clear with the boot but the Black and Amber jerseys then ran the ball back with real intent.  They were making good yards, and quickly.

The penalty count was building against RGC, and it was giving Newport the platform to build the attacks.

It wasn’t long before the got the try and it was a 2nd for Henry Plamer when they hit the driving maul from the lineout and crossed. O’Brien with the conversion.

Sam Williams was shown the yellow card on 27 minutes.  With that man advantage, Newport capitalised and moved the ball wide.  They had numbers and it was a simple score for Elliot Frewen to touchdown.  Again, O’Brien added the extras.

The 2nd half started with a break from Dafydd Williams but he was chased down on hallway as RGC looked for the try.  It was a bit loose from the Gogs as a couple of passes didn’t find hands.

Newport were more clinical when they got into the RCG 22,  and winger Lloyd Lewis claimed his 2nd try as they extended the lead.

The Gogs combined well with Dion Jones and Dafydd Williams setting up Louis Williams but he was tackled into touch with the tryline in sight.

It was a good period of rugby for RGC and the got the try when the ball went wide and Caio Parry ran over to score.  The boot of Dion Jones was on target for the conversion.

The scoreboard continued to tick over when quick hands and support running was finished with a Iestyn Galton try in the corner.

RGC again were reduced to 14 men when replacement  prop Jordon Pritchard was shown a yellow card.

Matt O’Brien twice went for the attacking crossfield kick but Dafydd Williams dealt with the arial challenge.

As much as RGC tried to keep them out, the homeside racked up try number 7 when Jon Morris scored on the whistle with the boot of O’Brien taking his side to 2nd place in the league
