In a game with a high error count from both sides RGC Under 16s continued their unbeaten start to this season's RAG competition with a victory over the visiting Dragon's Red Under 16s.
The game was halted for 15 minutes almost straight from the kick-off following a head injury to one of the Dragon's second-rowers and the delay appeared to unsettle both sides with the opening period being noticeable both for the large amount of dropped passes and the number of penalties conceded.
Nonetheless it was RGC who were to finish that period with a 14-0 lead. The opening score coming for Everen Ozbilen ( Mold ), with a short-range effort, and the second from Dei Owen (Pwllheli ) who picked up a loose pass 40 yards out to touch down under the posts. Both tries were converted by Cian Jones (Nant Conwy ).
The penalty count continued to rise in the second-half but nonetheless RGC continued to keep the scoreboard ticking over with a brace from outside-half Tomos Hughes (Bethesda), before in the final few minutes 2 more tries were added. The first from Huw Davies ( Bethesda ), the second following the best passage of attacking play of the afternoon from Cian Hanratty ( Newtown ). All 4 tries were converted by Jones.
At the end of the game RGC Head Coach Gav Hodgkinson was full of praise for the collective performance of his team,
' It just shows how high are the standards that the players set themselves that in spite of the final score they are not satisfied with their performance. Having said that, whilst errors were made in attack I was delighted with the defensive effort that we put in. To keep the Dragons scoreless was a big achievement and I thought that Owain Evans (Caernarfon) and Tal Taylor ( Nant Conwy ) in particular were outstanding. I would also like to take this opportunity on behalf of the entire squad to send all our best wishes to the Dragons injured player. Hopefully he will be back playing very soon. '
RGC 16s final game in this block of the RAG Competition is against the Scarlets West Under 16s at St Clears RFC next Sunday. 2.30 pm KO.
