Quins Take The Win

Carmarthen Quins 29  RGC 21

29th March 2025

With 5 points between them in the league, RGC were looking to extend that in Carmarthen but it was the homeside that put in a performance over a fairly lacklustre Gogs.

It was scrappy opening from both sides, with knock-ons, charge- downs and penalties making it a stop/start game.

Danny Cross got his hands on the ball on a couple of occasions and made some inroads before the opening score arrived for RGC on 13 minutes with a penalty from the boot of Billy McBryde.

The Gogs began to play the game in the visitors half, with Sam Williams carrying well making good yards.
It wasn’t a game full of pace, and a few breaks for injuries didn’t help the flow either.

In a game starved of opportunities, RGC took the chance of 3 points when they were awarded a penalty just inside Quins half.  The left boot of McBryde had the power, and it sailed between the sticks to double his sides lead.

A minute later and Quins were on the RGC line, before hooker Lewis Morgan dived over for the opening try. Simple conversion from Ellis Price meant Quins were in the lead.

That lead didn’t last long, with the boot of McBryde on target with a 3rd penalty as the clock reached 30 minutes.

Trademark in most RGC games this season, points kept on coming and similar to the opening try, Morgan found himself over the whitewash again for 5 points and Price converted. It was a lead that they would keep hold of for the rest of the afternoon.

It was 2 visits to the RGC tryline and 2 tries in the opening 40 minutes, whereas RGC never really put a foot over the Quins 22m line in the half.

Quins extended the lead with a penalty from Price just before the break.

It was an even bigger lead at the start of the 2nd half when Carmarthen scrum-half Lucca Setaro spotted a gap in the Gogs defence and ran in.  Price missed conversion.

That finally sparked RGC into some action and they began to stretch the Quins defence, with Danny Cross firing a pass wide to Caio Parry to make a break.  McBryde was next to test the Quins resolve with a cross-field kick that just couldn’t find the hands of Dion Jones.

When RGC did get to the line with bodies piled up, they were penalised for not releasing.
The homeside were the ones finding space with the ball in hand, with winger Louis Rees running with pace down the line at times. As much as RGC had the ball, it felt quite compressed on the pitch, with Carmarthen closing down any space speedily.

The try did come after some good work from the pack before shifting the ball wide and Caio Parry showed his pace, stepped and scored. McBryde missed the conversion.

Price had a couple of opportunities to extend his sides lead, but the Quins fullback nudged both penalties wide of the posts.

Much to RGC frustration, the game was being played in their half, and couple of scrums were also going Quins way.  The forwards began to pick and go, keeping the ball and edging forward.

As much as RGC tried to keep them out, they did claim the BP score from Iestyn Richards crashing over the line . Aled Thomas added the extras.

The game did end with a Gog try, when Osian Burt went over from close range and McBryde hit the conversion – but with 8 points between the teams in the game, the Gogs headed north empty-handed.
