RGC 25 Cardiff 32

Saturday 14th September

Both sides were looking for that opening, that chance to create a try in a fairly stop/start 10 minutes.

RGC’s scrum stood strong on a couple of occasions.

The first Super Rygbi Cymru try at Stadiwm CSM came from the visitors when they worked numbers wide and winger Dewi Cross found space to score.

It was a good spell for Cardiff, much of that down to handling errors from RGC – who were creating pressure on themselves especially in their own 22.

The one positive was the Gogs exit, as the worked turnovers and cleared with book to ball.

Cardiff extended the lead with a run through the middle, with good hands and numbers to score. Wilde nudged the extras between the posts.

RGC needed a response and from the restart went up the field, kept the ball moving and were rewarded with a Sam Stoddard try.  Dion Jones hit the conversion from range.

The pace of the game didn’t dampen, with both sides looking for quick ball and fast feet.

Scores were levelled with a superb RGC try., Breaks from Rhodri King and Afon Bagshaw created the attack, and it was finished from Player of the Match Sam Williams with the crowd on their feet.

RGC were finding more space and stretching the Cardiff defence as the half went on.

It was Cardiff who struck the first blow of the 2nd half after the lineout was stolen, and  Bowen chased a kick, touched down to score.

The Gogs had a good spell in the game, Sam Stoddard and Afon Bagshaw both went close to the line.

They did grab some points from a Dion Jones penalty.

From the restart RGC went on the attack again. Stoddard stopped in his tracks with the line in sight

On the line, they were patient, recycled the ball and were rewarded when Tal Taylor went over for the try. Jones added the conversion from Infront of the sticks.

Cardiff were back on the front foot, and it was RGC’s time to defend in a game that continued to be open.

RGC were close to taking the lead after Tudur Jones looping pass found Rhys Tudor, the winger dived to score but went into touch.

It wasn’t long til they were in the lead when a Dion Jones penalty spilt the posts, and it was 25-24.

Frantic times when Dewi Cross sprinted down the wing with RGC scrambling to stop him, but his pass went forward with the line in sight.

Cardiff camped themselves on RGC’s line, as the Gogs tried everything to keep them out but in the end the visitors were awarded a penalty which Wilde kicked

RGC claimed the ball from the restart but couldn’t keep it long enough to create an opportunity, but credit to them as they went on another attack.

Dion Jones was making some yards with ball in hand, and kept RGC on the front foot.

Both sides were under pressure, RGC to create a score and Cardiff not the concede penalty, but the homeside forced the ball at key moments and were unable to get themselves into a scoring opportunity.

As the clock ticked down, the sucker punch came from Cardiff when the got the ball and had the numbers to run down the field with Joe Goodchild scoring.

Director of Rugby Josh Leach “We were slow to get going out the blocks and that put us behind on the scoreboard.  That said we did well to get back into the game in the first half and convert the chances.

We spoke at half time about urgency in everything we did, and we played more of the game in their half – looked after the ball better and were more patient. They were quicker around the transitions and capitalised on the loose balls.

We had a chance at the end, but from the restart we just forced the pass and couldn’t get that score.

It shows were we are,  and it’s a good measure for us on what we need to do this week to improve on in training and that’s what we will build on”
