Defeat at Drovers 21 Oct 2023

Llandovery 50 RGC 19

Saturday 21st October 2023

After arriving late due to flooding en-route, the game kicked off 15 minutes late but RGC were on the frontfoot from the start, but the opening chance with a penalty was pulled wide by Sam Earl-Jones.

The pressure continued and they did get on the board with scrum-half Ollie Wynn sniped in from close range.  Earl-Jones hit the conversion against the upright.

Current Champions Llandovery got into the game and found space wide when the shifted the ball and grabbed to quick tries from Aaron Warren and Tomi Lewie with the boot of Ioan Hughes adding the extras.

Hughes extended the lead with a penalty.

The Drovers were moving the ball and running some good attacking lines and try number 3 went to Gabe Morris under the posts with a Hughes conversion.

An interception from Sam Stoddard on halfway gave RGC a try and Earl-Jones hit the conversion.

That sparked RGC into action, and the temp picked up. Ollie Wynn and Sam Earl-Jones both making good yards with ball in hand.

RGC needed to get some points on the scoreboard but it was the homeside that grabbed the BP try before half time when quick passes cut through the Gogs defence and Nathan Hart claimed the score.  Hughes again added the conversion to make it 31-12 at the break

The 2nd half started with a Drovers try from Jamie Hughes and Ioan Hughes agin was on pioint with the boot.

RGC went close with a kick to the line but Delwyn Jones couldn’t get his hands on the abll as it bounced up.

Against the run of play Sam Stoddard made another interception and this time raced from his own line o score. Earl-Jones converted.

The Gogs fell off a few tackles and the Drovers took full advantage, with 2 quick tries from fullback Tomi Lewis and again conversions from Hughes.

Kicking wasn’t followed by a quick chase which enabled Drovers time to collect and move the ball, getting them back down the field far too easily.

Defensively RGC errors were costly, and Llandovery were making it easy yards with ball in hand and quick passing and the Gogs couldn’t answer back to even grab a losing bonus point.

Ceri Jones "I thought we played some nice stuff early on, but I said at Halftime it was a old school RGC perfornce not a good way. We got excited with ball in attack but our defence fell off. 9p Our kick jjjói and missed tackles cost us. I will take that responsibility, and that's what we need to address this week. We cane here after a win last week and I expected more, and have not seen that many individual errors in a game for a long time. Perhaps we need to look out our mentality as we can't come to places like this and ship that amount of points and expect to win"
