A message from Sion

A message from Sion

December promises to offer some festive fun, as we now face a string of back to back fixtures taking us through to the New Year.

With Premiership fixtures against Neath, Swansea and Bridgend, followed by Round 1 of the WRU National Cup just around the corner, we are facing a challenging period, especially with the added layer of injuries and player availability.

Today we welcome Cross Keys RFC to the home of North Wales Rugby, and following their recent good performance and 26-18 win over Llandovery RFC, they are sure to be making the trip up North in a confident mood.

Last weekend we were on the road again down at Aberavon RFC, and although we had a number of players missing through injury, the side put in a good shift, but sadly it was a case of too little, too late. Saturday was a slightly frustrating day, as I think that all of you who made the journey down would all agree that the game was for us to take. Aberavon relied heavily on their set piece; in particular their scrum was the dominant factor in the first half which seemed to weaken in the second half, suggesting that our approach to playing high-octane style of rugby is still an integral part of the brand of rugby that delivers positive returns for RGC.

Karl Martin made a positive impact when he came off the bench in the second half, after surviving a couple of high shots from the opposition, he did all the basics in tough conditions and scored an impressive try.

A special mention and thank you to RGCSC, who once again made the long trip down south last weekend, to ensure the team had the great support for the full 80 minutes.

News over the last few weeks has been dominated around the ongoing issues surrounding Neath RFC. I personally hope the club is allowed the space and time it requires to address all the off-field problems. Club competitions in Wales needs the likes of Neath RFC especially with their rich history, so I wish them all the best and hope that they are able to turn things around.

Thank you all for your continued support.

Enjoy the match.

On The Mark

A warm welcome back to Stadiwm Zip World, for the 1st of 3 home games this month.

I have mentioned a few times about momentum in games, and if you don’t take the opportunities in games, then it can come back and cost you, and that was again the case last week.  In the 1st half, our possession and territory stats were above 60%, but we found ourselves 7-nil down at half time.

We need to improve our composure in our phase attack, and currently we are snapping at opportunities, which may be down to the age and experience in the group.

Aberavon were ruthless when they got their chances, and we were punished for our errors.  We have let a couple of tries in from misexecution at the line-out, and we are working on controlling these situations.

The boys are working hard, and individuals have put their hand up and said they could and should have done better at key times.  As a group, it is about learning from mistakes and improving, but a couple of times this season we have not learnt the lessons quickly enough.

December is a chance to get some points on the board, with 3 home games and 1 away game; we need to take full advantage of having the home support

We are a bit thin in the backline at the moment, with a few boys injured and some with work commitments, but we have to deal with that, and hopefully it all evens itself out by the end of the season.

The league is anything but predictable at the moment, with a few teams at the bottom picking up good results, especially with some positive input from the regions, teams have some quality players in the squad, which can make a difference.

Cross Keys have improved massively over the past few weeks, culminating with the win against Llandovery, with Jacob Botica arguably the best 10 in the Premiership in the last few years coming into the side, plus they also have Jason Tovey, the Dragons’ fly-half, so the quality is there.

As always thanks for the support and enjoy the game

Wales Women

2 RGC players featured in the Wales Women Autumn Tests, with Jess Kavanagh and Lisa Neumann both wearing the red shirt in November.

RGC winger Kavanagh saw plenty of positives over the 3 games “This year’s Autumn tests was the beginning for Wales Women. To have capped tests was amazing, but to put out the performance we did was superb.”

“All the work we did during the regionals gave us the head start, and we all worked hard as a squad, with a quick turnaround from first training session to face the Springboks.”

Winning 2/3 games and competing with the 3rd top team in the world shows just what Wales Women are about.”

Cyd-Reolwr y Tîm

A very warm welcome to you all and it’s a pleasure to welcome to Stadiwm Zipworld this afternoon the players, officials and supporters of Cross Keys

The first thing to do this afternoon, and I’m sure all the RGC supporters will join me, is to congratulate our Co-Captain, Evan Yardley for making his 100th appearance for RGC against Aberavon last week.  Evan has played an important role in the development of RGC and has already assured his place in the history of north Wales rugby, due to his contribution to the success RGC enjoyed in its early years.

Cross Keys are currently 10th in the Premiership table, three places below us and, although they lost 55-26 at Stadiwm Zipworld last season, they will travel north full of confidence, having beaten Llandovery 26-18 last week.  Cross Keys were formed in 1885 and they’ve been Champions in 1922 and 1936, along with winning the National Cup in 2012.  When Lloyd Burns won his Welsh cap in 2011, Lloyd became the first player from Cross Keys to represent Wales since Rex Richards, who won his cap in 1956.  When Rex finished his rugby career, he moved to Hollywood to become an actor, where he had several roles, including the King of Wongo in the film Wild Women of Wongo.  Rex also auditioned for the role of Tarzan, whereupon he made it to the final two, but lost out to Gordon Scott.

In comparison to other Premiership clubs we are a new club however, we do recognise the important role rugby plays in Welsh society and the responsibility we have to ensure there’s a successful team from the north playing on the Welsh rugby stage.  RGC supporters walk that little bit taller after we have won, and nothing more would put a spring in our step than a victory over Cross Keys, following our defeat to Aberavon

It’s going to be a hard game, but the advantage of playing at home will be key, therefore join me in raising our voices, showing our support for Mark and the boys, to create a great atmosphere and urge the team to victory

Once again, a sincere thanks to all the staff at Stadiwm Zipworld for their work in preparing the ground and its facilities.

Enjoy the afternoon and may I wish you a safe trip home following the game.

Flashback

RGC 14 Cross Keys 47

Swalec Cup, 21st February 2015

Cross Keys put in a dominant 2nd half display, as RGC were unable to stop the powerful pack creating the platform in the 47-14 win.

The opening 20 minutes were played at a tremendous pace, with both teams working hard in the defence. The attacks from both teams kept coming in waves, but it was the visitors that looked the more dangerous with ball in hand. Cross Keys were trying to use the right channel, with Phil Williams and Polu Uhi combining well on a number of occasions.

Debutant Will Bryan made a try-saving tackle, as winger Uhi raced towards the line. The Gogs were struggling on their own line-out, which was giving Cross Keys the opportunity to build some phases and put pressure on the RGC line.

The boot of Elliott Davies was going to play a big part in the game, and the fly-half hit the first points with a penalty.

Josh Leach made a break for RGC, but the scrum-half knocked on, as he was tackled. The tackles were going in hard, and the crowd responded to a huge Kelvin Davies hit, that led to a turn over.

It was the quick tap penalty from Davies that created the first try, as, from the opportunity, Harri Evans broke the line before offloading to Tom Blackwell, who turned on the burners to score. James Lang hit the extras.

Cross Keys looked to respond straight from the restart and were camped on the RGC line, as the Gogs put the bodies on the line to try and keep them out. The pressure told after a number of scrums, and the referee blew for the penalty try, with Davies kicking the conversion.

Just on the half-time whistle, Davies nailed a huge penalty from the half-way line to head into the dressing room with a 13-7 lead.

The 2nd half started off pretty slowly, before Davies hit another penalty, and the power of the Premiership side started to show as the half progressed. Nathan Trowbridge picked up the ball and raced through for the score, before Davies converted.

The scoreboard ticked over with tries from Scott Andrews, Jack Condy, Scott Mathews and Elliott Jones completing the dominant second half.

The Premiership side showed why they are 4th at the moment, as they were strong in defence and worked the ball well, when they had the chance. Fly-half Ethan Davies was also a key factor with tactical kicks to keep putting the ball back into the RGC half.

The physicality and power of the Cross Keys pack took its toll on the RGC players, as they were losing possession at the breakdown at key times. RGC build their game around quick release at the breakdown, but today the ball was spilt a number of occasions.

The Gogs did work a try from Tallis Karaitiana, after Cam Davies produced some good feet at the scrum, before Lang hit the conversion.

Over the 80 minutes, the strength of the Premiership Side was clear to see, and RGC were unable to match the physicality of Cross Keys, and it shows what is needed to compete at the top end of that division.

Academy Update

The RGC Under 16s squad have been back training at Eirias for the last couple of weeks, preparing for their upcoming outstanding fixtures in the Regional Age-Grade Competition and matches against the Scottish Rugby Union Green and Red Squads. The former take place during January & February in the New Year, the latter over the Easter Bank Holiday weekend. As well as using the indoor barn, main pitch and gym at Eirias, the squad have also been able to take advantage of the just-completed 4G pitch at the facility. With the RGC Senior, Women's, 18s & 16s squads all based at Eirias during the course of the season, the latter both allows the main pitch to be rested and provides much-needed additional training space.

It is a busy time for the squad as they look to combine training with revising for their mock GCSE exams and, just as they have been putting in the hard hours in the classroom, so have the Coaches, with Forwards Coach Dan Lycett having recently successfully completed his Level 3 Coaching Qualification, and Head Coach Gav Hodgkinson, along with backs Coach Paul Craft, being halfway down the road to passing theirs.'

Coach Gav Hodgkinson credits the commitment of the squad – “The lads are all in a good place; we are currently in our weekly skills sessions starting to build up the tempo and intensity for the next block early in the new year. The lads have been working really hard this past couple of session, in particular due to exams.

As a coaching group, we are really looking forward to getting the players back in twice a week, when the hard work continues for the game prep and where we can build on the development from the 1st block.”

Life Up North

As with all new signings, it is not just the on-field aspect that’s goes through a settling in period, but off-the-field players have to get used to new surroundings.  Fly-half Billy McBryde made the journey north in the summer – “I was lucky in the fact I knew a number of the boys, so in a sense settling in was a simple one. They are a good group of boys, and they all made me feel welcome.  That makes a huge difference, when you are trying to find your bearings after a move.  I had also worked with both Mark and Phil before, so I had a head start when it came to coaching and training in pre-season.  The major factor for joining RGC was because of the ethos of the team and the style of rugby they play. Mark is a brilliant coach, and Phil also brings his experience to the set-up as well.”

The former Wales U20’s player arrived when a few established team members moved on to pastures new: “The side had 3 players move on, which meant 3 key areas needed replacing, so I guess that has been the challenge not just for me, but for team balance. I have come in looking to bring my style, whilst also getting used to the group around me, and then, in turn, the players are getting used to me.  When you look at it that way, you can understand why the settling down period has probably been the challenge.  The team are looking to build the on field partnerships, and with that the consistency follows, and as we head into December that is what we are striving for.

It is an important month ahead for RGC, with 3 home games and 1 away game in the diary “As you can see from the league table, it is all very close with teams moving up and down places week on week. We have a chance to build on our home form, and take advantage of playing in front of the Stadiwm Zip World crowd. It is a unique playing experience here, with big crowd numbers both home and away. Speaking to the opposition when they come up, they say it's something they haven't experienced, and we need to make the most of that.”

As has been said many times before, age is but a number at RGC, with experienced players in the group being in their early 20s, so at 22 McBryde has taken over Afon Bagshaw’s coaching role at Coleg Llandrillo, working with Andrew Williams: “I wanted to get more coaching under my belt, as it helps my development, and started doing it last year at my local club. I get to spend time with our Academy players, and hopefully my experiences can help them, as they look to progress as players.  You have Sam Rogers coming through the Academy system, so hopefully I am able to assist in any way needed.  I always say challenge yourself, and don’t be afraid of mistakes you might make....it's not a case of being reckless, but it is no use just going through the motions. As long as you are learning, then that's the key aspect of player development.”

Today’s Visitors

Cross Keys ended a 9-game run without a win last Saturday when they defeated Llandovery. It was their 3rd win of the season, after they picked up victories against Bridgend and Neath at the start of the campaign.  They also drew with Llanelli last month.

We played each other once last season, on Easter Friday and we won 55-26 at Stadiwm Zip World.  It was an 8-try performance for RGC that day, with the boot of Jacob Botica also helping rack up the points.

Principality Premiership Round-Up

Former RGC fly-half Jacob Botica had a debut to remember for today’s visitors Cross Keys. He kicked 16 points to steer them to a 26-18 victory over Llandovery and end their nine-game winless run.

Newport now have now have back-to-back wins over the defending champions Merthyr, after beating the league leaders in a 30-28 victory on Saturday.  It was a game that saw the lead change hands seven times, but a late converted Elliot Frewen try saw Newport prevail.

Things are already warming up at the bottom of the Principality Premiership. Just a few weeks ago, you wondered just how Llanelli would get themselves out of the bottom four and avoid automatic relegation to the Championship. But things are moving in the right direction, and their 35-3 win over Bridgend at the Parc y Scarlets on the weekend dragged another famous old club into the mire. The encounter was effectively over by the break, with Llanelli 21-3 ahead, with just the matter of bagging a bonus point in the second period.

Ebbw Vale ran in winners with a 35-11 victory against Bargoed.  They took an 11 point lead in the 1st half with tries from Jack Dixon and Lewis Young. Bargoed came back into the game, but the Steelmen edged it with a couple more tries, including another for Lewis.

Lewis Williams was star man for Ponty, in the close win against Quins. He scored 4 out of 6 kicks to get the points in a 16-13 victory, including a late penalty to clinch the result.

Swansea were well beaten 24-5 by Cardiff in the Friday TV Game, even with plenty of possession and territory against Cardiff.  It was 24-nil to Cardiff, before the All Whites claimed a try, with Morgan Allen claiming Man of the Match for Cardiff.

Aberavon kept in the top 4 with the win against RGC. 2 tries either side of the break made the difference for the Wizards, before a late flurry from RGC in the 15-7 victory.

Supporters Club

The Aberavon trip

Our supporters’ coach made its way down to Aberavon on Saturday. Unfortunately, it wasn’t the result we wanted, but here’s what Supporters Club Secretary Diane, and committee member Denise, had to say about the day:

An early start on a cold December morning, and we found ourselves on board the RGCSC bus provided by Voel Coaches - very spacious and comfortable! Soon all had been picked up, and we were on our way to Aberavon.

A stop at Dobbie's for breakfast where one supporter bought a lovely present. The usual raffle took place, and the lucky winners won a Voel Coaches voucher, and second prize, a Christmas advent calendar. The coach driver sent around some chocolates, followed closely by mince pies, courtesy of Russ.

On arrival, we were warmly welcomed and shown to the Phil Morgan suite, and quickly served our meal.  The big surprise was seeing new members Willie and Janet Loots!

The Gog supporters gathered together in the stands to watch the game. We cheered and shouted our best, but it was not enough this time. Then it was back to the club for a last refreshment, before starting our journey home. Craven Arms stopover on the way back for the thirsty ones, fish & chips for the others.

Another good away day; pity about the result, but we can’t win them all!

Away Games

Our next supporters coach is booked in for the game against Neath on 15 December. If you want to secure your seat and continue this festive month in style, just email RGC1404SC@gmail.com, or come and find us in the fan zone. It’s just £10 for members of the Supporters Club and a guaranteed fun-filled day out.

Player of the Month

Our Player of the Month vote for November is open. Cast your vote by email or on social media. Once the votes are in after the game, we’ll shortlist down to 3 and ask you to vote again. The lucky player will be presented with their personalised Mugby at the game on 22 December. Extra thanks, as always, go to Mumph at www.mugbys.gift for kindly sponsoring the award for our Player of the Month. Check out his website for some fantastic products and offers.

Fan Zone

Our dedicated members from the Supporters Club Committee won’t be selling raffle tickets at the game this week. There will be two charities accepting donations, and we ask that our loyal supporters contribute to these charities, instead of buying their usual raffle tickets.

We’ll be in the fan zone as usual with Mugbys and calendars to buy. See you there, and thanks for your support!

West

We are pleased to announce that Colwyn Bay Rugby Club have set up a mixed ability rugby team, offering a senior inclusive format of the sport in North Wales

It is a slightly modified version of the standard contact game, with a team comprising both disabled and non-disabled players.  Players’ disabilities can range from learning difficulties to learning & physical disabilities. The non-disabled players provide a crucial role, not only to provide a supportive environment, but to help facilitate the structure of a regular game, and assist in both training and matches (as part of the team) forming a cohesive player group.

Why is Mixed ability so important?

Team sport is well known for various benefits: healthy competition, respect, teamwork, physical fitness, strength and conditioning, self-awareness, character building, confidence, self-respect, strategy, concentration, analytic skills and enjoyment, and rugby is especially good at enhancing some of those benefits.

Mixed Ability Rugby not only builds ability and self-belief on the pitch, but it also develops social skills and confidence off it.  For those with disabilities, mixed ability rugby often provides an invaluable chance to learn social skills, meet people and make new friends. The increased social skills can see players grow in confidence helping improve their general lives, and often means they are more prepared to ask questions, to pay for things independently, to be away from home and to travel around the country.

The post-game Clubhouse also makes for a relaxed setting, where members of both teams and supporters can mingle easily and discuss the game; they can be discussing a referee decision, a particular tackle or who should play fly half for Wales. Many people with disabilities will have difficulty with social engagement and, likewise, many non-disabled people may not have much interaction with disabled people - a rugby club provides the perfect setting to help improve the social skills of one group, whilst educating the other and breaking down barriers.

Players

Under 18’s who train with the team must only participate in skills and fitness drills; contact work can only be conducted if working with other under 18’s.

We will also be recruiting for backroom staff, as well as offering courses and CPD to volunteers:
