A message from Sion

A message from Sion

Home is where the heart is, and judging by our away form, (and I include our pre-match friendly at Clwb Rygbi Dinbych and first Premiership match of the season at Clwb Rygbi Rhuthun), we clearly are playing with a lot of heart away from home.

Hopefully, we will be able to transfer this good away form for today’s encounter with visitors Newport RFC – I’m sure, like me, you’re craving for a positive home performance at the home of North Wales Rugby – Stadiwm Zip World, Parc Eirias.

A lot of work is now taking place on planning for the future; in particular, we are now mapping out what life looks like for the North Wales Rugby Development Region following RGC’s first three years in the Principality Premiership.

The good news is that there is a lot to be proud of, and we are clearly going in the right direction. Last weekend, RGC Women took to the field here at Stadiwm Zip World to take on the Dragons Women and secured a 33-17 win, but more importantly, the day was a huge success with girls’ pre-match engagement activity and games taking place throughout the day.

Should RGC be in the newly-formed Celtic Cup? Well, this is a competition created for Regional Development teams, so the answer to this question for me is yes – RGC is the representative side for all 32 North Wales rugby clubs with the official status of ‘Development Region’, so this has been a missed opportunity in my opinion.

If we prepare well for the future, I’m confident that the next phase in the story of RGC and the North Wales Rugby Development Region will be significant.

So, as well as focusing on today’s fixture and all the other fixtures we face this season, please remember that RGC is one part of something very special. When girls, boys, clubs, communities, players, coaches, referees, volunteers and everyone else involved in rugby come together in North Wales, this is what makes RGC special and unique.

Every one of us can help make this journey that we are on a reality, and anything you can do (big or small) can make a difference.

Thank you all for your continued support.

Enjoy the match.

On the Mark

Welcome back to Stadiwm Zip World for another expected tough game, this time against Newport.

It is still early days in the season, and all teams are settling in.  Over the past few years we have looked at improving our away form and, when you look at it, currently we are unbeaten on the road and lost 2 games here.  Those 2 defeats came from the league leaders and the 2nd place team.

Against Ebbw Vale we had the better of the game; dominated, but didn't push on, which cost us. The Merthyr performance was the one that we are all disappointed with, but we showed character last Saturday when we went to Llandovery and ended their 20-game unbeaten home record.

As I said, there are plenty more twists and turns, and any team in the top 6 can, and have, beaten each other. The other thing I have noted is the amount of BPs that are being picked up. Maybe as there is more jeopardy this season, teams are playing for 80 minutes, trying to get something from the game...as, come the end of the season, all points will be vital.

We have a few boys back in the forwards department, which has given us a nice headache over selection...as we decide on which players will work best against the opposition, along with managing the players’ welfare over a long season.  It certainly means training has had more intensity, with the boys aiming to get in the starting line-up.

I would also like to give huge thanks to the travelling support that were superb at Llandovery. The noise they made before, during and after the game made a huge difference. When I watched the game back on TV, it sounded like a home game for us.

Hopefully, you will get behind us from kick-off today and cheer us on, as the noise and support drive the players on, especially at the times they need to dig in.

As always enjoy the game

Mei Parry on Both Sides of the Whitewash

Mei Parry on Both Sides of the Whitewash

Age is nothing but a number when it comes to RGC as, when you look at the ages of the experienced players in the squad, you are sometimes taken aback by the young age.

One of those players that fits the bill is 24 year-old Mei Parry.  “When you look around we have plenty in the squad who have grown up from the Academy, Division 1 East, Championship and Premiership…..so we know each other well.  I think that created a bond, and it makes it easier for other players to join, as we are a tight group who get on.”

The days of Division 1 East and the Championship clearly benefited the players, but it was a big step up “Those early days were tough, and the more experienced players were a big help….Kelvin Davies, Bryn Williams and Rhodri Carlton-Jones were big characters, and I learnt a great deal from them….we all did.  It is funny now, as we are the more experienced players that hopefully can help the players coming in from the Academy.”

Mei has also been coaching when he is not playing “I have been coaching at Holyhead, and it has been great to help and support the club. From the juniors all the way up, things are all going well, and being able to support them is something I really enjoy.  I have had a great experience being coached by a range of people….and have picked up plenty from Chris Horsman, Damian McGrath, Phil Davies, and now Mark and Phil.  Hopefully, I am able to bring that experience to my coaching….and I am learning from the other side of the whitewash.”

“I also think it has changed how I look at my game and analyse my performance.  Mark is great at the preparation, and the details he brings before games……sometimes it is the small details that can make a huge difference.”

RGC have some highs and lows in the opening 6 games “This season was always going to be competitive, and it has proved so already. When you look at the top 6, any team can beat any team…..and, as a group of players, we know we have to be at the top of our game to get anything.  A drop in performance, even for a short while can, and has, cost us this already.

It is also a bit of a family affair for the Parrys, with sister Rhodd making her RGC debut this season “I am not sure what advice I could give her, as with her playing in the back she clearly has more pace and skill!! It is brilliant to see her play for RGC, and we are all proud of her.”

Rhodd Parry

Season First

We caught up with RGC Women's Rhodd Parry, who is in her debut season with the Region.

How did you get started?

I’ve grown up watching both my brothers Rhodri and Mei play rugby and always thought it would be fun to try myself, so when my local rugby club (Holyhead) started a women’s side, I jumped at the chance to play. I have now been playing for a year and a half and loved every second of it.

How are you enjoying RGC?

It has been a brilliant experience for me. I have learnt so much from the coaching staff and team. Being able to develop my rugby at RGC has been, and continues to be, a very enjoyable experience.

What's the group of players like?

AMAZING! Being able to play alongside such a talented team is an honour for me. The girls are all so welcoming and are always ready to help, on and off the field.

Has having Mei play helped you?

Having Mei helps a lot, as he has so much experience on and off the field and he isn’t afraid to tell me his honest opinion. However, this can cause us to butt heads from time to time, but Mei knows best, I suppose.

Any goals for the next year?

My goals for the next year are to continue playing and improving my rugby.

RGC Coach Rachel Taylor has also been impressed with Rhodd “She’s been a real find this season. Someone who’s commitment to training is really starting to pay off. She fully embodies the way we want to play rugby and is already scoring tries for us! I’m excited for her; there are lots of opportunities in the women’s game now, and I feel that if she continues to work hard, she could see some real gains.”

RGC Women 33 Dragons 17

Sunday 7th October

RGC Women claimed an impressive win against Dragons at Stadiwm Zipworld, with winger Jess Kavanagh grabbing a hat-trick. It was the home side that started brightly, with some good attacking intent, but they couldn't capitalise on the possession and territory. Dragons took the lead with a try, but credit to RGC as they continued to play heads up rugby

The game was struggling with any flow, as both sides racked up the penalties. Midway through the half, RGC got on the scoreboard, when Kavanagh crossed the line, and took the lead with a Bethan Davies conversion. RGC would have felt they should have had a bigger lead, but a lack of composure let them down at times.

The Dragons tried to get back in the game, and the RGC coaching staff would have been delighted with the defence, as they kept the visitors out time and time again.

That composure was there in the 2nd half, and speedster Kavanagh claimed two more tries with clinical finishing. Bethan Davies was on form with the boot, but the fly half grabbed an individual try when she intercepted a pass in halfway and raced down the pitch to touch down. She also added the extras.

The game was put out of reach when Hannah Hughes picked up a try in her home debut. The Dragons did claim a couple of tries towards the end of the match, but it was a day to remember for the home side in front of a large Stadiwm Zip World support.

Coach Rachel Taylor was delighted for her players, especially to win at home: "Great performance today; it’s such a special occasion for the girls to have a home game, so I’m happy more for them that they stepped up and delivered in front of their friends and family. Next week is a really tough prospect, but now we can go knowing what we can do!"

Cyd-reolwr y Tîm

A very warm welcome to you all this afternoon and it’s a pleasure to welcome Newport players, officials and supporters to Stadiwm Zip World.

I’m sure all RGC supporters will join me in congratulating Evan and the boys for their key victory against Llandovery last Saturday at Church Bank in an exciting game that was played in front of the S4C cameras.  Following our defeat to Merthyr the week before, it was important that the boys got a victory in their next game to keep us in touch with the teams above us in the Premiership.  Although we are currently 6th in the table, we are only five points behind Ebbw Vale, who are top of the table.

Newport is one of Wales’ most famous clubs that’s full of rugby history and culture.  The Black and Ambers were formed in 1874 and over the years they have been Welsh Champions on 12 occasions, the last time being 2003/2004.  Newport have also beaten South Africa in 1912 and 1969, Australia in 1957 and New Zealand in 1963.  Over 150 Newport players have represented Wales, including players such as David Watkins, Brian Price, Keith Jarrett and Mike Watkins.  This season Newport have won three games and have lost three games, including last week’s game at Rodney Parade where they lost a close-fought game to Aberavon 35-38.  Currently Newport are 8th in the Premiership and are just four points behind us.

I will often say that we have one of the best group of supporters in the Premiership, and we are very grateful that you come to support us in your thousands.  This support provides a significant contribution to protecting not only the team’s future but also the game’s future in the north.  Every player wears the RGC shirt with pride, and there’s not one player that underestimates the privilege of being able to play at Stadiwm Zip World in front of a large passionate crowd.

Once again, a sincere thanks to all the Stadiwm Zip World staff for their work in preparing the ground and its facilities.

Enjoy the game and may I wish you a safe trip home following the game.

Principality Premiership Round-Up

Assistant Coach Phil John praised RGC’s  character after the win away at Llandovery. The Gogs ended a 20-game unbeaten home record for the Drovers “We didn’t have to say much this week, as the players were disappointed from the Merthyr game and they took ownership during the week.  The big thing was seeing what we had talked about in training being taken onto the pitch, and the game plan was followed.  The players knew they had to up their performance, and they did.   I think our discipline was key as well, and, if you compare it to Llandovery, that is what gave us the field position today.

Ebbw Vale maintained their unbeaten start to the season after a 28-14 against Swansea. Paul King opened the scoring, with captain Ronnie Kynes going over soon after. The All Whites got back into the game, but the Steelmen grabbed 2 tries in the 2nd half for the BP win.

Merthyr went up to 2nd place after a victory against Bridgend. The Ironmen took the lead after 7 minutes, when Hemi Barnes touched down.  They put in a strong 2nd half to race away with the game, with the scrum half scoring a try in a Man of the Match performance.

Pontypridd racked up a 76-38 win against bottom club Neath, and ran in 17 tries in the process.

Llanelli grabbed a late win to edge past Carmarthen Quins. The Sospans ran in 3 tries, including Joe Roberts, which meant kicker Ashley Sutton hit the winning points.

Bedwas were victors away to Bargoed, to pick up their 1st win of the season. Bargoed were 14 points up, but the visitors bounced back, and a couple of 2nd half tries swung the advantage in their favour.

It was another thriller in the capital, with Cardiff edging a 36-35 win. Joey Tomlinson was the star man with a hat-trick of tries. Cross Keys had the chance to win the game, but a last-gasp conversion went wide from the boot of Jason Tovey.

Today’s Visitors

This season Newport have won 3 and lost 3 and head north, after defeats to Llanelli and Aberavon. We last played them in May, and it ended in a high-scoring game and a 43-36 RGC victory.

Lead by Rhys Jenkins, with over 120 appearances for the club, they will be looking to finish higher than last year’s 9th place. Josh Skinner and centre Matt McGovern are new additions, and they also have Wales 7s player Chay Smith on the wing.

RGC Supporters

We had a very successful trip to Llandovery last weekend. What a win it was! We ran our Supporters Club coach to the game and had an enjoyable day all round. Our next Supporters Club coach will be on 20th October for the game against Carmarthen. If you don’t want to miss out, then email RGC1404SC@gmail.com to secure your spot. And, if you’re already a member of the Supporters Club, it’s just £10!

Here’s what Steve Williams from the Supporters Club had to say about the Llandovery trip: “We didn’t have an early start for a change, which took a bit of getting used to. We thought the coach clock was faulty! A couple of ‘Alaw ultras’ had started early (singing) as we travelled along the A55, picking up the rest of the RGC supporters. Soon enough, the bus was pretty full.  After the stop at Dobbie’s for lunch, and not breakfast for a change, we were on our way to Llandovery. It’s the closest club to us, which RGC fans, with tongue in cheek, call 'our local derby'. We arrived at Llandovery, had a drink in the clubhouse, and then went to sit in the stands with the other RGC fans that made their way there. An enjoyable game followed, and a great atmosphere that is always created when RGC fans make the away trip.”

Last week we gave you the chance to vote for your September Player of the Month. After hundreds of votes for different deserving members of the squad, we narrowed it down to just 3. And the final winner was... Jordan Scott! Well done Jordan.

Look out for the next vote on our social media channels!

If you haven’t joined the RGC Supporters Club yet, you can find us in the fan zone.

‘The RGC Supporters Club would like to thank Mal ‘Mumph’ Humphries at Mugbys for sponsoring the Player of the Month mug. Mal has kindly donated his time and creativity to provide these wonderful mugs to recognise the RGC Supporters Player of the Month. I’m sure our inaugural winner Jordan Scott will find pride of place for his mug and may well collect further mugs through the season, although I’m sure the competition for them will be keenly fought.

Watch this space, as Mumph has also created a Supporters Mug, that is a must for every Gog coffee table, and will be launched later this month!

Thanks again Mal, and well done Jordan on your performances throughout September.’

Years at RGC

Funniest story

Too many to choose ... all the bus trips home were amazing experiences.

Best memory

It was the first game at Gilfach Goch; great to see that a lot of the guys who played that day are still here or have moved up the ladder.

What does your time at RGC mean to you?

Looking back, my time at RGC meant so much, and I was immensely proud to have been one of the guys that was part of the start of the journey. Great to see that we've gone from strength to strength – I now love nothing more than watching on a Saturday afternoon.

Favourite Song

It was the one when Kelvin and Rhods used to serenade one another... it had us all in stitches!
