A message from Sion

A message from Sion

IT’S NOT HOW BIG YOU ARE, IT’S HOW BIG YOU PLAY

Remember that guy who gave up? Neither does anybody else. After only four games in the league, it is clear to see that the Principality Premiership is going to be extremely competitive, so the message to everyone is to never give up.

Resilience is going to be a key factor with RGC this season; already we have incurred a number of injuries throughout the squad, and whilst these are challenging, how we bounce back and recover will be critical in making this season a real success.

Last Friday night down at Sardis Road was all about resilience – to secure a win on the road, especially down at the House of Pain, is a big ask, but we did it and we should all be proud of the performance and result.

Things aren’t going to get any easier, and we are currently in a very tough block of games. Today we welcome cup and league champions Merthyr RFC, and following a loss against Aberavon last weekend, I’m confident that we will be facing a Merthyr team tonight who will be hungry for a win.

I’m personally very excited about tonight’s fixture under the floodlights live on BBC; it’s something we have pushed for and tonight we have the opportunity to impress, both on and off the field – live on TV. We have invited all of our 32 North Wales rugby clubs to attend tonight; we hope this will help further build a strong relationship and connection with all of our clubs and communities.

Let’s get behind the boys tonight and make some noise.

Thank you all for your continued support.

Enjoy the match.

On The Mark

Welcome back to Stadiwm Zip World, and we are looking forward to another entertaining match against Merthyr.

Taking it back to last week, it was a far more holistic performance against Pontypridd.  We didn’t start the game with accuracy – giving passes away and failing to hit touch, which meant we lost momentum, and credit to Pontypridd who took advantage.

We showed plenty of resilience, and at half time we asked the players to be better than last week. Against Ebbw Vale we lost, after being up at half time, so last week we came from behind and finished strongly.  It was also pleasing that the players showed some composure to stay in the game before moving away in the last quarter.

Player development is a slow process; you have to back the players, and they need to back themselves, so it was pleasing to see the forwards give us that platform last week.  If you get bullied, you won’t get the ball, so being able to compete is important.

Credit also needs to go to our backroom staff, who are full time with the Academy, and then give up their time for the senior side.  The commitment from them is huge, as after doing a day’s work in the Academy, they stay on to support us.

Tonight we face Merthyr, who are well coached by Dale and will be defensively well-drilled. Last season they contained our speed and width, so we will need to improve aspects of our game.  Past matches have been tight and one score games, so tonight will come down to the small margins; whether it is around the scrum, or in the backline, we need to be as accurate as possible.

As always thanks for your support and enjoy the game.

Mascot

The mascot today is Cian Rhys, who plays for Bethesda. He only started playing rugby last season, and we are delighted that he is the mascot tonight.

If your child would like to be a mascot for the upcoming season, then please email Lawson.scott@sky.com

And hopefully, they will be a “lucky” mascot when they lead out the team in the Principality Premiership.

TV Times

Sport on TV is not unique, but watching RGC on BBC Scrum V was a different experience for many last Friday.

Week in, week out, the RGC faithful head down south in numbers to follow the side, but a live game away at Ponty gave many more a chance to witness an impressive performance.

It was also a chance to hear Mark Jones during a game, mic’d up and shouting “Go on boooy” at a key moment….and no different to supporters watching RGC getting excited in the stands!

We watch games live, but the cameras give us an opportunity to hear players pre/post game - and even during a game, as Phil Steele runs across the pitch to grab a word with Afon Bagshaw - gum shield still in mouth.

Many people will have had a conversation over the weekend or on Monday about “seeing that rugby team you watch playing on TV” and the conversation is always easier with a win!!!

The other bonus is that in this modern age, you can rewind and watch a Sam Jones try over and over….then retweet it to the masses.

We have a first again tonight, with a live home game on BBC2 and a Friday Night Lights game….and hopefully, like Mark Jones, we will all be saying “Go on boooy” by full-time.

Academy round-up

Sunday 16th September

RGC and Dragons North  finished all square (14 all) at Stadiwm Zip World, which ended the block of games for the Academy side.

RGC Under 16s started their first home game in this season’s Regional Age Grade Championship with a bang, when they opened the scoring after only 3 minutes. Following a sustained period of pressure, outside-half Ewan Denton crashed over at the side of the posts and, with full-back Carwyn Jones slotting the extras, they were 7-0 up before the team from Gwent had chance to catch their breath. However catch their breath they did, and only 2 minutes later they were on level terms when a turnover ball allowed their right wing to score. The conversion again successful. Much of the remainder of the 1st half was spent in midfield with both teams struggling to achieve any real consistency in attack and tackling strongly in defence. It was unsurprising, therefore, that it was a moment of individual magic from RGC's full-back Carwyn Jones that was the only other score of the 1st period. Having made the initial break he then used his pace to outstrip the cover defence to chase down his own kick and touch down the ball over the try line.

The second half started in much the same vein as the last 10 minutes of the first had ended, with neither side in the ascendancy. 5 minutes in, however, with the only clear-cut line-break of the entire period, the Dragons’ centres combined to send Oli Andrews under the posts. The resultant conversion brought the 2 teams level again, and that was the case when the referee blew for time. Both sides had chances to take the win but, in truth, none were clear-cut, and the large number of scrums and penalties rather reflected both sides’ frustrations.

Speaking after the final whistle, RGC Head Coach Gav Hodgkinson commented: “You could clearly see at the end from their reaction how frustrated the players were with the result. The fact that they were so disappointed just shows how far they have come and the standards that they now expect of themselves. Overall we are delighted with the progress made by the boys, who have shown a fantastic attitude throughout.“

Daf

Cyd-reolwr y Tîm

A very warm welcome to you all and it’s a pleasure this evening to welcome Merthyr players, officials and supporters to Stadiwm Zipworld

Merthyr are the current Premiership Champions and National Cup holders however, the belief tonight is that the result will be close, but as we have seen over the past two seasons, very rarely have games between RGC and Merthyr followed the script that has been written for them.  There is something about the way both teams play that brings the best out of them which leads to memorable games which is something we’ve seen over the last two seasons where we have come out on top on three occasions and Merthyr on two occasions

Tonight, we know that we can expect a stern challenge from Merthyr.  Currently both teams have played four games, won three and lost one.  We are third in the table whilst Merthyr are fifth and although it’s still early days, it’s fair to say that tonight’s result is key to the Premiership title hopes of both teams.

Without a doubt this has been one of the hardest starts to a season our players have experienced.  This year the pressure, both physically and mentally, on the players has increased rapidly.  However, the players enjoy the challenge of playing Wales’ best clubs regularly and in tonight’s game the players can make their mark and set their stall for the season.

Tonight’s game will be tough and exciting and the advantage of playing at home will be key.  Our supporters have welcomed Premiership rugby with huge enthusiasm and the atmosphere that’s been created by the supporters has been excellent.  I’m sure that this atmosphere that’s full of passion will continue tonight as we seek a victory in what I’m certain will be a huge contest

It's a pleasure to pay tribute to Andrew Williams tonight who makes his 150th appearance on the RGC stage. Andrew embodies everything that’s good about RGC and the rugby we play namely: skill, flair, passion, determination and pride.  Andrew has been an excellent ambassador for RGC and due to his contribution to RGC’s success in its early years, Andrew has already ensured his place in the history of North Wales rugby.

Once again, a sincere thanks to all the staff at Stadiwm Zipworld for their work in preparing the ground and its facilities

We fully appreciate your support and I wish you all a safe trip home following the game

Enjoy the game

RGC Speedster Looks Forward

It has been pretty non-stop on the rugby front for RGC’s Jess Kavanagh, who has been playing for RGC Women, Wales and Wales 7’s over the past year.

The winger isn’t complaining and is excited about the new season ahead.

“At RGC we have lost a couple of our experienced players, and like all teams, this adds some challenges for us as a squad.  I have to step up, with another couple of girls, and make sure we lead.  We have plenty of new faces in the team, and we need to make sure they settle into the environment, both on and off the field.  It is a big step up, and making sure they have the support from us is vital.”

New Season, New Faces

“Over the past couple of seasons, when you looked at everyone’s side, you could name all the players, but the exciting thing now is seeing all the new players coming through.  It shows that all the regions have been working hard to bring new talent through…which can only benefit Wales.”

“Looking at the pathway now, it is brilliant for girls coming into the sport; from 6 years of age you have the clusters, schools, clubs and then the region.  I started playing late; at the age of 15 I joined Bro Ffestiniog, before moving to Dolgellau.  My rugby pathway involved plenty of travelling...Caernarfon, Scarlets and then on to Wales; the big positive these days is that opportunities are available all across the region.  My motto is ‘Never Give Up’, and no matter what your dream is…if you work hard, you can achieve it….hopefully, the girls coming through will feel the same.”

“As for this season, it will be another tough one for us but, as a region, we are learning and improving all the time. Plenty of new additions to the team will mean the more we train and play, the better we become.”

RGC

“It is a huge privilege to play for RGC, and something I am really proud about. After all these years, to have RGC playing against the other regions…. and competing, is amazing.”

“It is great that my family and friends can come and watch me, and not have to travel too far either!! “

“We are lucky to have the facilities to train at Eirias, and we are all privileged to say we play for RGC…and hopefully we can build the foundations for the years ahead”.

A VERY TASTY NEW PARTNERSHIP

A VERY TASTY NEW PARTNERSHIP

RGC and the North Wales Rugby Development Region are delighted to be in partnership with Llaeth Y Llan, who are official partners and shirt sponsors for RGC Women and U18s girls for the 2018/19 season.

This is the 2nd season for RGC Women and U18s girls, who play the other four regions in the Regional Programme, and round 4 will be played at Stadiwm Zip World on Sunday, October 7th.

Sion Jones, General Manager for the North Wales Rugby Development Region and RGC, commented on the new relationship “Wales is fortunate to have some fantastic brands and Llaeth Y Llan is one of those with a great back story. Being a family-owned and run business means they share similar values to the North Wales Rugby Development Region and RGC; working together, we can bring these values to life through this new partnership.”

It is a significant move for RGC to be working with such an iconic North Wales brand, which is known across the country, and also shows the regard of the Women’s side, and the huge progress both players and coaches have made over the past couple of years.

Coach Rachel Taylor said “It’s been great to have a big sponsor take an interest in the women’s regional side; there’ve been some big movements down south, and it’s important we keep up in North Wales. It really helps that it’s a Welsh company, as we are really proud of our ‘Welshness’, as are Llaeth Y Llan. It also helps that the yogurts are amazing, of course, and a big favourite with coaches and players!"

Speaking about the new partnership, Gruff Roberts, Company Director for Llaeth Y Llan said “Here at Llaeth Y Llan we are always keen on working with the local community; we are proud to have the opportunity of being involved with the RGC women’s team and aiding the development of the game in North Wales.”

Today’s Visitors

Merthyr head up to Stadiwm Zip World as Premiership winners for the last two years, and they also picked up the National Cup last season as well.

Coached by Dale McIntosh, they are one of the most drilled sides in the league, and past encounters with RGC have been memorable ones….last minute tries and penalties.

Mathew Jarvis is always a threat with the boot, and appears as one of the top point scorers every year.  Winger, Jay Baker, signed in the summer and brings pace and experience from the Ospreys and Aberavon.

Captain, Craig Locke, is also another player who has been a major force in the Merthyr success over the past couple of seasons.

This season they opened with a 24-18 win away at Cardiff, before a home win against Bedwas. They remain unbeaten on the road after a victory at Llanelli, before last week’s defeat at home to Aberavon.

Bucket Collection

Last month, everyone in the RGC family was saddened to learn of the passing away of Bill Parry, who had been the Assistant Manager to the Senior Team during its early days in Division 1 East and the Championship. Bill had been struck down with sarcoma, which he fought, with his customary good-humour, right up until the time of his death. Although sarcoma is one of the less common forms of cancer, 15 people are diagnosed with it every day in the UK. As a mark of respect to Bill, we are tonight holding a Bucket Collection for Sarcoma UK, the chosen charity of his family. We very much hope that you are able to make a donation, no matter how small.

Principality Premiership Round-Up

Aberavon beat today’s visitors Merthyr 22-14, in an impressive performance at the Wern.  Andrew Waite and full-back John Richards were on form for the Wizards.  Scrum-half Jacob Flynn got the vital try, before a late Garland penalty sealed the victory. Merthyr’s points came from Kyle Evans, Jay Baker and conversions from Jarvis.

Llandovery sit at the top of the table after another victory, this time against Llanelli. Tries from Richard Williams, Aaron Warren, Gavin Thomas and a penalty try gave the Drovers the Bonus Point.

Carmarthen Quins came from behind to grab the win against Cardiff, after trailing 10-9 at the break. An Ed Siggery yellow card didn’t help the cause for Quins. but a late Reynolds try claimed the victory.

Swansea are up and running after a win against Neath, with Luke Griffiths grabbing 20 of his side’s 25 points.  3 penalties in the last quarter were enough to see the All Whites home.

Ebbw continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 1 point victory against Bridgend. Rhys Jones kicked a late winner to make sure the Steelmen won.

RGC Head Coach Mark Jones praised his forwards and coach Phil John after the win away at Pontypridd.  The win came in front of the Scrum V cameras, with Dan Owen grabbing a brace of tries, along with Tom Grey and Tom Hughes.

150 Up For Andrew Williams

Andrew Williams reaches another milestone tonight as he plays his 150th game for RGC. It is a great achievement, and well deserved.

One teammate who goes back along way with him is Josh Leach “First off, well done Andrew. The first centurian, and now the first to reach 150.  Andrew has been the most consistent player for us, in terms of availability, training and performance. You know what you get with him, and the work he does is not always noticed…but you can tell when he isn’t playing. The other great thing is that all the experience he has gained is now being put back in his coaching. He took on the Rugby Coordinator role at Coleg Llandrillo, and a number of the players he coached are now playing. I know he spent a lot of time with Robin Williams, and it is great to see them both playing for RGC now.”

Years at RGC - 6

Best Game – Without a doubt, Pontypool away, which pretty much got us promoted to the Premiership.

Funniest Story – It has to be Chris Horsman putting his foot through the barrier at Sale away, when we conceded a try.

Best memory you have – Just spending time with the boys, the hours on the bus, going for coffee on a Saturday morning and obviously playing with them. We were a tight unit and went through a lot to get where they are today.

Looking back what does your time RGC mean to you – Everything; I was lucky enough to captain the club, and it’s something I’ll never forget.

Favourite songs on the coach trips

1 – Notorious BIG – Juicy
2 – Adele – Someone like you
