A message from Sion

Welcome back to Stadiwm Zip World, Parc Eirias – the home of RGC and North Wales Rugby.

After a good start to the pre-season build-up and league, it’s exciting to be back at Stadiwm Zip World with Principality Premiership action. Today we welcome Ebbw Vale RFC for what should be a very competitive match. Having lost to them twice in 2017/18, we have a lot to prove and I’m confident RGC will be looking to set the record right especially now that we return to the home of RGC and North Wales rugby.

Six teams have started the season off well with two wins out of two, Ebbw Vale RFC are one of those, so it places even more importance on today’s fixture.

The positive start to the season has been even more impressive due to having to work through several challenges. The upside is that we have players returning from injury over the next couple of weeks including Harri Evans and Aron Evans. Our young Development Squad have been presented with opportunities which the likes of Bailey Rae has taken. Also, the return of Afon Bagshaw to the squad and we will soon be adding the likes of Beau Williams and Karl Martin to the RGC ranks.

The future looks positive but, of course, the hard work starts here today.

This is a massively important year for RGC and the North Wales Rugby Development Region, every single opportunity on and off the field must be taken to ensure we continue to showcase the passion, enthusiasm and appetite for top class rugby in North Wales.

North Wales is on a journey and we must do absolutely everything possible to stay on course – nothing is impossible!

As well as receiving some fantastic support and warm welcomes from our North Wales community clubs including Clwb Rygbi Dinbych and Clwb Rygbi Rhuthun, I’m delighted and encouraged to see the rejuvenation of the RGC Supporters Club – there is a lot of positive energy being invested into the Club, so if you haven’t already signed up, I’d encourage you to go and find them and sign up today in the Heart Fanzone.

So here we go…let’s get behind the team today and make some noise.

Thank you all for your continued support.

Enjoy the match.

On the Mark

It is our second home game of the season but our first here at Stadiwm Zip World and I know the players are looking forward to running out at 2.30pm.

I am pleased to have picked up all the available points so far and we have played well in parts over the past two games. The aim is to up the level today against an Ebbw Vale side high in confidence themselves. I thought we attacked well against Neath, but against Swansea it was a bit more stop/start which stopped our flow at times. Defence-wise, we muscled up well in both games, but a few missed tackles in places let us down so we need to tighten up today.

When we have been getting the ball out wide, we have had some of the X-Factor and it has been good to watch. Historically, Swansea has been a tough game both here and at St Helens, so to come away with 5 points was something we were happy with. This season, teams are scrapping for every point, so getting a win on the road will be challenging.

We have had a good few players unavailable with injury or work so we haven’t rotated the squad. Over the next few weeks, we will look to use the squad with boys returning.

Everyone is looking more intently at the Principality Premiership, but for us it is about the upcoming game and looking no further…..biggest job is the next job and today it is Ebbw Vale, a team that beat us twice last season.

We also have some TV games looming and that adds some new aspects for the players. The spotlight is on the players, their performances are analyzed and critiqued…yards covered, passes completed and tackles completed. It is important that we don’t lose sight of the processes and focus on what we need to do. We won’t be looking to change anything or do things differently…it is still about 80 minutes of rugby.

As always, thanks for your support and enjoy the game.

Efan Is A Place On Earth

RGC Scrum- half Efan Jones is somewhere on holiday….but where?

Here are some clues, and you can find the answers somewhere in today’s programme.

The stretch is between Malaga and Granada province's Costa Tropical

It has prehistoric caves, with the tallest natural pillar in the world

Academy round-up

RGC 16s went down 38-5 against Cardiff Blues South last weekend, and forwards coach Gwyndaf Davies gave his reflection on the game: “Whilst we are all disappointed, both with the loss and the margin we lost by, there are still a lot of positives to take from the game. The Blues presented a far greater physical challenge than we have faced thus far, and it would have been easy for heads to drop given the amount of territory and possession that they had. That they did not says much for the character of the team, and we are already looking forward to Sunday’s game against the Dragons North at Stadiwm Zip World.”

Sunday 16th September

RGC U16s v Dragons North 2.30pm Stadiwm Zip World

The U18s lost 34-17 to the Ospreys, in a game where they found themselves 24-nil down.  Performance Manager Josh Leach knows his side can take positives out of the performance: “It was a more confident performance, and we dominated the ball and territory.  We gave them a 24-nil start through turnover and intercepted tries.  We got back in the game with a try before halftime, and 2 after the break, but it was another turnover for Ospreys that took them away with the game.  We will need to be on point from the kick off against Dragons on Sunday if we are to compete.”

New Faces Set To Arrive

RGC have bolstered the squad with two new faces for the season ahead.

RGC will have two new additions in the next couple of weeks with Beau Williams and Karl Martin joining. Head Coach Mark Jones believes the new additions will benefit the squad for a number of reasons.

“We have maximised the talent from North Wales at the moment in these areas, and with all signings they have to offer more than we have currently in North Wales. Beau is Welsh Qualified and he will come over to give us something extra. We have Robin Williams and Bryn Jones who have done well for us, along with the more experienced Andrew Williams, so Beau will add to that mix.

With Afon Bagshaw gaining his Wales 7s contract it means he won’t be as readily available to us, so we needed support for Dion Jones, and Karl will give us that.  He is a specialist goal kicker and has that tactical kick base to his game, so offers a foil to Dion’s more running game.

As we have always stated, when we bring players in they must add to what we have, and as we saw with Tiaan helping to develop Danny Cross, and Jacob with Sam Rogers, then these recruits will help the next line of North Wales players to come through.”

We caught up with both players to find out more about them.

Beau Williams

Position
Lock/Blindside Flanker

Age
24

Teams
Tauranga Sports, Bay of Plenty Steamers, Chiefs Development

How did the move come about?
I was always interested in playing in Wales given my heritage, my agent got in contact with the Welsh Rugby Union and we went from there. (My Grandmother was born in Cardiff.)

Thoughts about coming over?
It’s huge for me, unfortunately my grandmother passed away when I was young and we lost ties a little bit with the Welsh side of the family, so for me to have the opportunity to get across to Wales and reconnect is important and means a lot to me.

What will you bring to the squad?
I feel I will bring a physical, dynamic edge to the team, thrown in with a bit of experience and leadership. I’m also a team first player who’s big on culture and team chemistry, so that being said, I can’t wait to get over there and meet everyone.

What type of player are you?
I’m a physical, athletic lock/blindside who can knuckle down in the tight but also has skill and pace to play expansive rugby.

After speaking with Mark Jones, how has he sold the club to you?
There were a few things that caught my eye. I was really interested in how they are heavily focused on player development and promoting players. Also the fact that the club has been successful over the last couple of seasons and run a really good rugby environment. It was also mentioned that there’s good bunch of lads there who are keen to train hard and play good rugby, so really it was a no brainer for me.

Karl Martin

Position
Fullback and Wing

Age
22

Teams
False Bay Rugby Club and University of Cape Town

How did the move come about?
I'm currently finishing up my studies and have been looking for a change of scenery. The option of going to RGC came up through the rugby agency I'm contracted to and it seemed like a good fit.

Thoughts on coming over?
I'm really looking forward to almost every aspect of it except for being greeted by the UK winter.

What will you bring to the team?
While I take the game seriously and want to improve, I love playing the game.  So I will bring with me a positive attitude, some hard work ethic and I'll help build on the team environment.

What type of player are you?
I focus a lot on trying to do my job on the field well.  So from the back I enjoy my kicking game, communication and defence.

How did Mark sell RGC to you?
It sounds like the club has a great balance between focusing on the individual and improving their game, while still building a space where players can be a part of a community environment

Meurig Voyle - Clwb Rygbi Dinbych

Meurig Voyle - Clwb Rygbi Dinbych

We received the very sad news from Clwb Rygbi Dinbych this week of the passing of Meurig Voyle. The WRU, RGC and The North Wales Rugby Development Region would like to offer our sincere condolences to his extended family.

Meurig was a larger than life character and he will be sorely missed by friends, family, club and community. His voice could often be heard right across the Vale cheering on his beloved Clwb Rygbi Dinbych but I'm positive his memory will live on with the club for years to come.

Meurig has had a long relationship with the Club being a founder and lifelong member from the very first meeting to establish the club, to his recent lifetime achievement award which was presented to him following the Club's 40th Anniversary Dinner by the world's premier referee Nigel Owen whilst he was at the Denbigh Infirmary.

He played an active role as the Chairman of the Club between 1983-86 and followed this by being the President between 1987-90 as well as serving on the General Committee for many years. It was said that he was worth at least twenty opposing supporters with his vocal support from the touchline as his voice boomed out across the pitch, whilst off the field he was always at the forefront in supporting the many social and fundraising events which were needed as the Club began to develop its playing strength and its facilities. He was a tireless worker on match days doing the mundane tasks that others took for granted especially making sure that no players came into the club with their dirty boots on and relieving everybody of their money as he sold raffle tickets to keep the club running.

He will be missed by all the members especially those from the early days when he worked so hard for the club.

A very warm welcome to you all and it’s a pleasure to welcome Ebbw Vale players, officials and supporters to Stadiwm Zipworld this afternoon

Ebbw Vale were formed in 1879 and the Steelmen are one of Wales’ most famous clubs, full of rugby history and culture.  Over the years, the club has produced several players who have gone on to play for Wales including Denzil Williams, Mark Jones and Kingsley Jones.  Recently, under the guidance of Head Coach, Greg Woods, Ebbw Vale have developed into a hard team to beat and this afternoon we can expect a stern challenge after they beat Llanelli 43-10 in their opening game of the season before recording a 19-17 victory over Aberavon last week in a close and exciting game in front of the TV cameras.

Talking of the opening games, I could not have wished for a better start to the season as we won our opening two games against Neath and Llanelli, claiming maximum league points in the process and the boys are keen to continue this winning streak with a victory this afternoon.

I would also like to wish our Under 18 and Under 16 teams the best of luck in their games against the Dragons tomorrow.  Over the past few weeks they have been competing in the Regional Age Grade competition and although the results haven’t gone quite our way, the young Gogs have performed well.  Regional Age Grade rugby is not only a great platform for our players, but it is also fundamental to the development of our players.  For our Under 16’s and Under 18’s to regularly play Cardiff Blues, Dragons, Ospreys and the Scarlets at this age is an opportunity previous generations of young North Walien players didn’t have.  If we play the best often enough, we will get the results we all want.

It will be a tough game this afternoon but the advantage of playing at home will be key.  I’m sure that with a large crowd behind us, creating a great atmosphere and noise, will be a huge boost to the boys who appreciate the support you give us.

Enjoy the game and sincere thanks to all the Stadiwm Zipworld staff for their work in preparing the ground and facilities.

May I wish you all a safe journey home following the game.

Tales from the Swansea away day

It was back on the road for the RGC Supporters Club this week for the second RGC away game; well, Ruthin was away but not away, away!

The coach collected those lucky supporters who managed to reserve a seat on the coach down to Swansea at different points along the North Wales coast and Wrexham.

It made its journey South through the beautiful countryside of North and Mid-Wales; one RGC supporter commented, “I don’t know how those poor South Wales teams manage such a journey every other week!”. Seriously though, the trip South seems very quick, the banter on the coach and the rest stop makes for a very enjoyable journey. Committee members were on-hand to sign up any new Supporters Club members, to answer any questions about future trips to the South of the principality and to sell the raffle tickets. Speaking of which, we’re pretty sure that we set some kind of record when we drew the raffle on top of the Brecon Beacons.  We were also somewhat surprised, but pleased, that the winner of our high-altitude raffle for an RGC baseball cap was Kamarl, one of the drivers for the trip.

After a quick ‘passport check’ at Builth Wells, we made our way to Swansea and were soon at the St Helens ground. The coach dropped its cargo of eager and thirsty RGC Supporters at the door, where those of us that had taken advantage of the pre-match hospitality that we had arranged, were shown to a lounge overlooking the pitch. And, we got to enjoy a roast turkey dinner and chocolate fudge cake!

The BBC film crew (Dan the camera man and co.) took advantage and completed their segment on the RGC travelling support for BBC Scrum V, airing later this month!

Those who have travelled to Swansea before, know the best standing spots -the clubhouse is some way from the pitch as the ground doubles as a cricket pitch. The ‘RGC Massive’ made its way to the opposite side of the pitch to position themselves in and around the halfway line in readiness for kick off. They were joined by those loyal away-day travellers who made the journey by car, and those who are based in the South.

As the RGC team made its way onto the pitch, they were met by the deafening chorus of ‘RGC, RGC, RGC’ and the supporters were met by the new RGC kit. It’s certain to be popular as merchandise over the coming weeks; well done XBlades. The RGC chants silenced the home crowd who made every effort to cheer their team on.

The game ebbed and flowed as it usually does against a dogged Swansea team; RGC out of the blocks early but Swansea made a fight of it. Half-time saw RGC just ahead with 21 points to 14 and during the break our own Chairman, Russell Everett stepped up to represent North Wales in Swansea’s version of pass the ball through Brian Moore's mouth.  Despite Swansea drawing level early in the second half, when the final whistle blew, RGC had proven themselves the better team but they will know where the improvements are needed.

With the game won, our second bonus point victory of the season (two from two!), the coach waited for the jubilant supporters to return to their seats in readiness for the journey home.

As with the trip down, the journey back was straightforward, made easier by the victory and the conversations of the next away trip! Another stop as we headed north, for chips and a leg stretch before dropping those happy fans home. Those dropped off in Colwyn Bay were serenaded by Katherine Jenkins as she brought the curtains down on The Proms at Stadiwm Zip World; coincidence, or did she secretly know the result?! RGC My Lord, RGC…Katherine may have whispered as she left the stage!

A successful away-day for the fans and team alike; for those who were not fortunate to get a coach seat, book early to enjoy the travelling experience of an RGC away day. C’MON GOGS!

Principality Premiership Round-Up

Billy McBryde struck 14 points in RGC’s BP win against Swansea, with tries coming from Efan Jones, Tom Hughes, Sam Jones and Cam Davies. The RGC Fly-half was delighted to pick up all the points: “It was a hard fought win. Credit to Swansea, I thought they deserved the 4 try bonus point. As a group we felt we took the foot off the gas after our quick start and played in the wrong areas, but with the wind second half and the impact off the bench it was a good 5 points away from home. Special mention to Phil John for running the tee on with blister!”

Pontypridd and RGC are the only teams with full points after 2 games.  Ponty ran in 7 tries in a 43 – nil win against Llanelli. Rhys Shallard opened the scoring after 5 minutes before Number 8 Sieniawski went over. The visitors had prop Adam Thomas yellow carded and Ponty took full advantage with 2 Stuckley tries and Knott also touching down. Webber picked up a brace of tries to set the emphatic victory.

Llandovery made it 18 home wins in a row with a 20-3 victory against Cardiff.

Today’s visitors Ebbw Vale came from 17-nil down to beat Aberavon in front of the Scrum V cameras.  Steffan Thomas scored after the break before Ronnie Keynes went over for the try. The winning points came from Ashley Sweet with a 72nd minute try before Jones kicked the conversion.

Merthyr picked up another win with a 27-7 result against Merthyr, Winger Lewis Williams grabbed a 1st half hatrick in the process.

It was another home win when Carmarthen Quins ran in 41-28 winners against Cross Keys. Aled Thomas opened the scoring before Ellis Lloyd and Dale Ford ran in tries. The bonus point try came before half-time with Liam Davies grabbing it.

Dion Aims to Deliver

RGC Full-Back Dion Jones returned to RGC last season, and in his 2nd Premiership Season he is looking for even more in his game.

“Looking back at last season, I think I found my consistency mid-way through the year, as it was probably down to me settling into the team.  This season my aim is to keep that level of performance going and build on that.

As a team I think it’s fair to say we under achieved, and towards the end of the season we let some games slip away from us, especially on the road.  It is vital we see more games out this year and make sure we are competing for the whole 80 minutes.  We know games will be difficult, and when we go on the road the challenge is there from kick off, so from a performance point of view we can’t drop in our levels or we will get punished….which was the case last season.

The coaching staff have been working on our game management and making sure we play the ball in the right areas at the right times.  We need to be wiser and play what is in front of us, and when you look at our opening 2 games we are doing more of that.

It is also about keeping calm when we go behind, and not letting the game run away from us. Ideally, it is about shoring up the defence and starting brightly, but not panicking and sticking the game plan is a must if we are going to have any success this season.

Losing Schwarzy, Bots and Tiaan has meant we have lost some experience as they all were starters last season and central to how we played, but, as a team I think we have adapted.  Billy McByrde has slotted in, and with him and Danny Cross being left footed it actually offers something different.  We will keep developing and working on creating those opportunities.

Hopefully my experience can help others, as I have gone through what the younger players are experiencing now.  Basically, for me it is about being approachable, I might not always have the answers but if the Academy players have any questions then I am available to help.  A lot of it comes down to confidence, so hopefully I can assist in the development.”
