A message from Sion

A message from Sion

There are some intriguing gaps and battles at both the top and bottom of the Principality Premiership, but there are also some interesting clashes in the guts of the league, with teams fighting for the all-important top six positions, which are going to be crucial ground to claim ahead of next season’s reduced 12-team league.

Today we welcome Aberavon RFC to Stadiwm Zip World for a match that presents an opportunity for RGC to close the gap on teams like Aberavon RFC and Swansea RFC, who both sit ahead of RGC currently. A couple of wins and some results going the way of RGC could see the North Wales side move up a couple of positions, placing them in the top six and wrapping up a reasonably good season for the North Walian side.

The 2018/19 season has been a very challenging season for RGC; there have been a number of key injuries throughout the squad, and our depth has certainly been tested. There have been weeks when we have even struggled to pencil in a 23-man squad, but to be fair to this team, not once have we not turned up and fulfilled a fixture.

This is testament to the character of the squad and coaching staff; both committed to bringing the North Wales rugby values to life each and every day. OK, the results may not have gone the way we would have wished at times, and yes, we could have won a number of games that we dominated and had control of…but we’re still heading in the direction of that top six position, so things haven’t been all that bad this season.

The challenges have tested our resilience, which has been excellent, and the pressures applied to our resources has also meant that future North Wales talent has had to step up and take up the gauntlet. Young players from our developing Academy have put their hand up this season, and I’m confident that some of these will play an integral part in the next phase of the North Wales rugby journey…so it’s not all bad.

We should start to look at gaps as opportunities; over the years North Wales rugby has faced a number of gaps, but we have always united and worked hard to close them.

Hopefully, we will close one or two more gaps and maybe open up a few of our own today!

Thank you all for your continued support.

Enjoy the match.

On the Mark

It is good to be back at home, after a fixture list that ended up with 4 away games on the bounce.

Results-wise it is 2/2 on the road, with a couple of wins and a couple of narrow defeats.  The big plus was the performances in all the games.

Llanelli last weekend was a game that was typical of our season, in the fact we just couldn’t get over the line and lacked that edge in parts.  Hopefully, we can learn from last week, and, as a young side, take that into improving our game today.

The Wizards are similar to us in the style of play, and they won’t be afraid to attack from deep so, as we head into the drier pitches, it should be an entertaining game today.  We look to adapt our style depending on conditions and opponents, but the faster pitches have traditionally suited our game.

Both sides have also taken a couple of scalps against teams at the top of the league, showing potential, but have lacked consistency in the season.

Our injury list is as long as the Brexit withdrawal agreement at the moment, so team selections have meant we have relied on youth, and looking at it in a positive way, we have given those players more exposure and game time recently.

Most sides in the league looked at the last 2 seasons as a chance to develop, so that in year 3 the side would be a strong one.

We achieved in the past 2 seasons, then lost a number of experienced players – Tiaan, Bots, Schwarzy and Worthy – and, when you add in the injured players, it would be a really strong side.

All of that is due to factors out with our control, but what we do have now is more player depth.

Hopefully, the mini players all the way through to the Academy can see the pathway, and those youngsters will have rugby idols who are North Walian, which has always been a key factor for us.

As always, the coaches and players appreciate your backing, and enjoy the game

Josh Leach 100 Not Out

Josh Leach 100 Not Out

As the RGC stalwart reached the century last month, we thought it would be good to get some words from some people who know him.

Will Morecombe

As both a keen cricketer and someone who doesn't really want a fuss made about the fact that he now has played 100 times for RGC Josh, would probably want the above headline above an article about his prowess with a bat, rather than one marking what is quite a considerable achievement. An achievement made all the more remarkable, when one considers that, as well as training and playing with the Senior Team, he also has to find time for his full-time job as RGC Academy Manager, in addition to being Head Coach for the RGC Under 18s and being father, with all that demands, to an energetic 1-year-old.

The fact that he has made such a success of all of these roles is testament to his organisational and time-keeping skills.

His versatility similarly stretches to the rugby field where, during his RGC career, he has started at scrum-half, flanker and centre at varying times, and while he might not be as quick as he once was, anyone who has watched him play recently can testify to the fact that he still hits as hard as he ever did.

Josh has certainly come a long way since his RGC journey began, when he was appointed as the Skills Coach at Llandrillo College, but I think all who know him would agree that, while he might not have as much hair as he did when he first started, he is still the same Josh, and RGC is all the better for that.

Colwyn Bay RFC

It’s not often you get to applaud the progress of an old team-mate, but Josh deserves the praise of his club and old team-mates. An abrasive and physical player who gives everything to the team, whether it’s for the Bay in division one, fifteen years ago, or again for the Bay mid-table in division two, or pulling on the oxblood jersey of RGC, Josh leaves it all on the pitch; this is why he’s reached this milestone. Well done Josh. From all at the Bay.

Rachel Taylor – Colwyn Bay Coach

It’s fantastic to see Josh reach his 100th appearance for RGC. He is a real ambassador for RGC. All at Colwyn Bay RFC wish him all the best.

Former RGC Scrum-half Alex Schwarz

Huge congratulations to Josh on reaching the 100 games for RGC. When you consider he’s done that playing scrum half, centre and in the back row, it speaks volumes about what an intelligent rugby player he is. On top of that he’s a fantastic coach and, on a personal level, helped me develop as a player throughout my time at RGC.

Flashback

RGC 86 Llanharan 15

April 16th 2016

RGC ran in 14 tries as they played their last home game of the season at Eirias.

The Gogs were 2 tries to the good early on, when Maredydd Francis and Tiaan Loots scored, with a conversion from Alex Schwarz making it 17 nil.

The early pressure and intensity ebbed away, when Mei Parry was given a yellow card, and the away side got back into the game. RGC were being made to work hard in defence, as Llanharan camped themselves on the Gogs’ 5 metre line.

Llanrahan couldn’t break the wall of RGC bodies, but got on the scoreboard with a Scott Jones penalty.

As soon as RGC returned to 15 men, they picked up another try, when Danny Cross and Tiaan Loots combined, before Tom Hughes collected the pass to run in. Schwarz added the extras.

It was Schwarz who claimed the bonus point try, before knocking over the kick.

RGC were looking dangerous with every attack, and it was Kelvin Davies’s turn to show some skill with a great one-handed offload to the supporting winger Hopkins, to run down the line to touch down.

Joe Simpson got in on the scoring act when he spotted a gap and made a run under the posts. Another simple conversion from Schwarz.

The visitors did get a try, and the first half edged to the break, before RGC picked up try number 7, when some quick hands from the backline spread the ball to Hopkins to sprint down the pitch.

The second half started brightly with Tom Hughes picking up his 2nd and 3rd try of the game.

Schwarz then finished off a good run with his 2nd try of the game. RGC were reduced to 14 men again, when Rhys Williams was yellow-carded, but the Gogs remained in control, and the gaps in the Llanharan defence increased.

The man who capitalised on Llanharan tiring was Tiaan Loots, as the centre scored 2 great individual tries showing pace, power and great feet.

Danny Cross added 4 conversions in the 2nd half

Tom Seddon and Sam Jones went over for scores, before Llanharan picked up a try from Kieron Martins, and Scott Jones kicked the conversion.

U16s Set to face Scotland

For the 4th consecutive year, Stadiwm Zip World will see International Age-Grade rugby this Easter when the RGC Under 16 side face their Scottish Rugby Union counterparts. Having played against the best players of their age within Wales in the recently-completed RAG Competition, the weekend will allow the young Gogs to test themselves against the cream of the crop from North of the Border, the benefits of which are obvious to the RGC Academy Manager, Josh Leach: 'With the RAG Competition over, our thoughts are now turned to the composition of next season's Under 18 Regional Age-Grade squad, and the fact that we able to play 2 games against quality opposition over the course of the Bank Holiday weekend gives the entire squad the opportunity to play. This year’s Under 16's have performed really well against the other Welsh regional sides this season, and we are all looking forward to seeing how they get on against what I am sure will be hugely competitive Scottish teams. Previous years have seen some high-quality rugby played, and I am sure that this year will be no different.'

Simpson-Building Bangor

RGCs Joe Simpson is settling into his new role as Bangor RFC hub officer, with a role that covers various remits, as he explains:

“We want to develop Bangor Rugby Club and increase participants. The other aim is to increase engagement in the local community.

“I am also coach of both the Men's and Women's University sides as well, which is another good challenge for me.  As a result, we are looking at the links between the rugby club and the university, not just on the field with players, but also students wanting to get into sport, such as media, video work or even team management.”

“The challenge is for us to not keep looking at the past, as that has gone; it is all about what foundations we can lay now for the future.”

“Setting those core values was key, and having something that everyone can work to. The vision is to have a solid 1st team, which is underpinned by a strong youth and junior team.”

“Bangor has a good set-up with 3 pitches and a decent size clubhouse, so we are able to be more active in getting people there.”

“The club actually does more than it thinks, and we need to build on that in the community.  The mini and junior section has good numbers, but the drop-off happens after 16.”

“So we need to look at that, and when a side is successful, youth players aspire to play for the seniors.

“The players also have commitments with work and families, so we need to be more proactive at how and when we train. Making sessions more efficient, and looking at when and how long we train for.”

“Other small steps include having pre-season organised early, so we have plans in place.”

Principality Premiership Round-up

Bargoed pulled off the result of the weekend, with a win against Swansea. Man of the match Louis Blacker inspired his side's 31-26 win, with Barney Nightingale scoring a late try with Prosser converting.

Bedwas picked up a win that could prove to be vital in their Premiership survival. They were behind by 20 points on the 60-minute mark. They ran in 2 tries in the final quarter to claim the game.  Joe Scrivens ended the game with 16 points.

Cross Keys are now 10 points from safety, after falling to a 52-15 defeat at Aberavon.

They took the lead from a Gareth Price try, but that was the highlight, after the Wizards then turned up the heat and ran in 7 tries.

Ebbw Vale fell to a 26-10 defeat at Carmarthen Quins. Tries from Jac Wilson and Javan Sebastian, along with full back Aled Thomas. 16 points were enough to grab the Quins victory.

Was the move to RGC made easier with your brother playing:  Yes, as I knew the majority of the lads before I came, so it was quite handy and easy for me to settle in, which always makes a huge difference.

Last room-mate: Chunka (Jordan Jones); had a few on away trips.

First few months: It has been very different, training sessions wise, and not what I have   been used to. It’s a lot faster and more physical… fitness is easy though, ha ha!!!

What would you say is the difference rugby-wise between here and England: The Premiership is a lot faster and more physical than National 1, and the past few months have been a good learning curve and experience.

Supporters

On Sunday 7th April, we made our way to Parc Y Scarlets on the supporters’ coach. Here’s what Steve Williams, resident away-game correspondent and member of the Supporters Club, had to say about the trip:

“Despite the 1 o’clock kick off on a Sunday, RGC fans travelled down in numbers on what was one of the busiest coaches I’ve been on, which included a few new faces too! It just goes to show the popularity and commitment to RGC and North Wales rugby as a whole.

After a stop-off and the raffle (where a lucky supporter won an RGC cap signed by George North), we arrived at Parc Y Scarlets just after 11.30. We were shown to the Quinnell Lounge by the very welcoming Llanelli staff, where we were joined by other RGC supporters who had made their own way down, meaning once again we outnumbered the home support!

We eventually took to our seats for the game and, despite a disappointing first half, the lads stepped up in the second and were unlucky not to come away with the win. As usual, the support for RGC was loud and constant, and it definitely gives the team a boost.

After the final whistle, we headed back to the lounge for the final hour and then boarded the bus for the journey home. Overall, another enjoyable day, and a welcome change travelling home in the daylight!

A big thank you to the fans that travelled down – it doesn’t go unnoticed by the rest of the Premiership clubs and South Wales rugby.”

Here’s a picture of our raffle prize winner, Roger Smith, and some of the supporters at the game!

Next away trip

Our next trip is on 20thApril to Bridgend. If you haven’t travelled with us before, then now is your chance, as the end of the season approaches. Here’s what Glyn Jones, one of our recent travellers, said about our away trips:

“Having made the car journey to South Wales many times for work, and during the 6 years our daughter was at Cardiff University, the opportunity to actually see the countryside, whilst at the same time being able to relax, makes it a really good day out.

It does give me the feeling of being an accepted member of the ‘Gogledd’ supporters community, not just at the away, but also at home games, exchanging our shared views on our team’s performance and successes, something I would not have experienced had I not travelled on the supporters coach.”

Today’s Visitors

Currently in 7thplace, Aberavon have picked up 15 points in their last 5 games, with 3 wins and 2 defeats. They ran in 52 points against Cross Keys, and the week before fell to a loss at Llanelli.

We lost to the Wizards earlier in the season 15-7, but have only actually played them once at home, back in 2017, when we came away with a 32-24 victory.

As it stands, we have won 3 games, and they have won 2 in the clashes between both sides.
