A message from Sion

A message from Sion

It’s not just on the field that we require great teamwork; we also need it off the field.

Contrary to what you might read and hear in the media, RGC doesn’t wholly rely on the WRU for funding to enable the region to perform and participate in the Principality Premiership. Far from it, in fact, we have been very fortunate to have engaged with and partnered up with some outstanding partners and stakeholders, who have helped along the journey over the last 3 years.

Conwy County Borough Council have continued to endeavour to support the North Wales project enabling RGC and the North Wales Development Region, the proof of which can be seen in the new 4G pitch which has been an excellent addition to the facilities on offer at Parc Eirias. There is no doubt that we wouldn’t be here today without exceptional and unequivocal support from Conwy County Borough Council.

Key partnerships with Halliwell Jones, SP Energy Networks and Cartrefi Conwy have certainly bolstered the financial position of RGC and the region. Without the support of key partners like this, RGC would struggle to take to the field week in week out, and their support isn’t just financial. We have been in a privileged position having partners who are willing to go above and beyond – even to the extent of offering employment to players.

Our Academy goes from strength to strength, but again this would not be possible without the enthusiastic support provided by our Academic partners – Coleg Cambria, Grwp Llandrillo and Bangor University have continued to contribute tirelessly to the academic programme and North Wales player pathway. We recognise that we have a good footprint across the East and West now, but we also recognise that we need to connect with the South, hence the positive discussions currently going on with Newtown College. But it goes further than this; our relationship with the Academic partners is now seeing some return on investment, with RGC players Andrew and Rhys Williams working as Rugby Skills coaches at Grwp Llandrillo and Coleg Cambria.

Then there’s the likes of Aberconwy Car & Van Hire, Voel Coaches, Whisper Hotels and Holiday Inn, who literally keep us on the road, provide a bed and make sure everyone is watered and fed, both for home and away fixtures.

Support goes a long way, and with the outstanding support and service from Elite Pro Sports (XBlades) who provide RGC and the region with the very best quality of on- and off-field apparel. We have been very fortunate to have gained some great local support from first-rate North Wales brands and businesses such as Llaeth Y Llan, who sponsor RGC Women and U18s girls, and Worldspan Creative, who have supported us for nearly two years with our branding, digital and design requirements.

There are so many other unsung heroes including staff, sponsors, concessions, volunteers, local businesses… and then, of course, there are the supporters who have remained loyal, even over this unnerving and unsettling season, but in fairness, you have all continued to get behind the region and provide some of the best support in Welsh rugby today.

So, don’t believe the hype. Without all of these partners, sponsors, supporters and helpers, we would not be anywhere close to where we are today. We have achieved so much, and there may well be more interesting chapters to this story.

For now, a big thank you to you all for making this story a success.

Enjoy the match.

On the Mark

Welcome back to Stadiwm Zip World, where we are all looking to build on our last outing away at Newport.

That victory will go down as one of our best performances on the road, and going down to 14 men after 12 minutes galvanised us. We didn’t get off to the best start, but the boys responded after Robin was sent off. Our accuracy, physicality and kicking game all worked well and credit to all the boys. Hopefully, they can take that on, and it will have given them a psychological boost heading into the next 4 games.

Squad-wise, it’s a bit of a mix with boys coming back – Rhys Williams, Andrew Williams and Sam Wainwright all on the way, but then we have Tommy Hughes, Will Bryan and Ilan Rowlands all out. So it is a bit like robbing Peter to pay Paul, selection-wise.

As I said, we have a chance get some momentum and consistency in results, and when you look at our last 5 defeats, most have been within 7 points – Aberavon away, and Ebbw Vale, where we ran in 4 tries are both games like that. The Swansea game was the only one where we weren’t at the races and never looked like winning, and Llandovery was another where we should have won.

Last season, we had those experienced players who were able to dig us out of games, and that’s what we have been missing. The good thing is the younger players are learning, and that was seen in the Newport game where we made sure we closed the game out.

Quins will bring up a strong set piece today, as well as a good kicking game, so we need to be focused from the first minute. They are a good side and build some width in their attacks, so it is important we look at our ruck speed as well.

As always thanks for your support and enjoy the game.

Flashback

Winger Harri Evans was delighted to get his first try of the season, but also pointed out the defence work from the team in the win against Carmarthen Quins “Of course it was good to get the try and, to be fair, it was a pretty easy one after Dion (Jones) passed it to me on the line. To nil them in the 2nd half was also a big positive, and we have worked hard in training this week.

The intensity was ramped up Monday and Tuesday, and it helped us in the game today. They pushed us back onto the line a few times, but credit to all the boys, as we made sure they didn’t get over. We want to create a tough atmosphere at home, and Mark Jones has spoken about it being a fortress. We want the visiting teams to look at the fixtures knowing it will be a difficult place to come to, week in, week out."

The 3 RGC tries were the highlight of a game that didn’t really spark into life, but once again the RGC defence worked hard. RGC opened the score with an early penalty from Dion Jones, before the Carmarthen Quins fly-half Daniel Jones did the same for the visitors.

Quins then controlled the play for 20 minutes as they camped in the RGC half and looked to find that gap in the Gogs’ defence. The game was paused for a period, due to an injury to Alex Taylor, which didn’t help the flow of the match.

RGC then lost the ball, and as a result, Quins stretched the field, and when winger Ford kicked ahead from halfway he sprinted past Tiaan Loots to collect the ball and dab down for the try. Jones hit the extras.

Fly-half Jones missed a penalty opportunity but minutes later booted another kick over to make it a 10 point lead.

The visitors were more than happy to slow the game down, and also pinned RGC back with some tactical kicks getting behind the RGC backline.

RGC finally made some inroads with a good attack combination from Dion Jones, Rhys Williams and Tom Hughes, before the centre was bundled into touch.

It was the pack who then impressed with a 30-yard drive that didn’t stop moving, and it rumbled all the way to the line before being held up. It was a statement of intent against a strong Quins set piece, and resulted in a penalty that was kicked by Jones.

Dion Jones was impressing with ball in hand, and collected numerous high balls in the 1st half as well, snuffing out any Quins attacks.

RGC took control of the ball, and they picked up their first try after Andrew Williams picked up the ball from the scrum and charged downfield, before Alex Schwarz set up Rhys Williams to go over in the corner.

The pace picked up and, with that, RGC scored another superb score. Harri Evans collected the ball and made a side-step that left the Carmarthen Quins tacklers practically in the stands and darted over the half-way line, before Rhys Williams opened up the defence, and Loots finished the try off.

It was more of the same when the 2nd half started, and probably the loudest cheer of the day came when Harri Evans got his first try of the season. Loots and Schwarz made a huge break before the ball was shifted wide for the centre to go over. Dion Jones added the conversion and a penalty for a successful afternoon with the boot.

For much of the second half, RGC were working without the ball, and the Quins tested the whitewash on a number of occasions, but the RGC line stood strong.

The Carmarthen set piece is one of the strongest in the league, but it was unable to breach the RGC line. At one point they had 10 minutes of ball and territory, but the home side defended with all they had.

Tim Grey, Tiaan Loots and Dion Jones gave RGC some attacking outlets to ease the pressure, but the biggest positive was the defence work, and the fact the Quins were unable to get any points in the 2nd half.

Academy Update

Another good performance from RGC U18s last Sunday, which saw them run this year’s Regional Age Grade Winners, the Dragons, right to the final whistle (20-24).

Having controlled a lot of the ball and territory throughout the game, RGC should probably have put some more points on the board during the first 60 mins, however the Dragons’ defence held out. Again, it was credit to the Dragons as they converted their chances to score three times late in the first half, taking the lead into the break at 17-6.

The story of the second half was much the same, but it was try for try as the gap in the scoreline closed toward the end of the game, eventually finishing 24-20 in favour of the Dragons.

It was another improved U18s, who have made some great progress since coming back together in January. The players have really bought into training and they've grown in confidence through training against the Senior team on a weekly basis. With one more game to go against the Scarlets at home next Sunday, they'll be looking to finish the season with their best performance to date.

U16s Report

RGC 17 OSPREYS WEST 24

It was heartbreak for the RGC U16 side as they went down to a penalty try, awarded with almost the last play of the game, against a classy Ospreys West outfit. It was the visitors who started best and they opened the scoring after only 5 minutes through their winger George Dunn, and they were to go further ahead in the 21st minute via full-back Alex Hughes. Being 12 points down (the Ospreys’ opening try had been converted by their outside half Dan Edwards) it was imperative that RGC were next on the scoreboard and just before half-time they were rewarded for their efforts, when a break by centre Finlay Hare was finished off by their full-back, Sam Stoddard, and with Carwyn Jones adding the extras, the half ended with the Ospreys West side holding a narrow 12 points to 7 lead.

5 minutes into the second half, replacement winger Peter Pattenden with almost his 1st touch dotted down in the right-hand corner and, although Jones narrowly missed the conversion attempt, the scores were tied at 12 apiece. The Ospreys’ powerful outside centre Iestyn Lewis was next to cross the whitewash, but his effort was soon cancelled out by RGC replacement prop Rhys Jones who was the first to capitalise on a dropped Ospreys pass on the halfway line and, having kicked on the loose pass, it was he who benefited from the subsequent mistake from the Ospreys’ cover defence to touch the ball down.

Both sides had chances to win the game in the last 10 minutes of the game but, with less than a minute to go, RGC were adjudged to have killed the ball close to their try-line, and the referee immediately marched under the posts to award a penalty try. All that remained was for the Ospreys to safely collect the restart and kick the ball into touch with the final act of the game.

Speaking after the match finished, RGC U16s Head Coach Gav Hodgkinson found it hard to hide his disappointment:

'It’s hard enough being the Coach and losing a game to a penalty try in the last minute, but how I feel is nothing compared to the emotions I am sure are currently being felt by the players. Coming back from being 12-0 down, and it could have been more, against such a strong Ospreys side showed a huge amount of character and not a little skill, which makes losing in the manner that we did all the harder to take. We were by no means perfect, particularly early on, but once the players began to believe in themselves, they showed from 1-23 that they are more than capable of competing at this level. We have one more game left in this year’s RAG Competition, against the Scarlets West Under 16s, back on the 4G at Eirias, and we will be looking to finish the campaign on a positive note.'

Quarter for Wales 18s

Quarter for Wales 18s

Four RGC players were selected for the Wales U18s squad and spent this week training at the National Centre of Excellence in Cardiff, preparing to play matches in Scotland.

Josh Leach is delighted for the players "Pedr Jones (Coleg Llandrillo / Caernarfon RFC), Oscar Crowe (Coleg Llandrillo / Llandudno RFC), Matthew Buchanan (Coleg Llandrillo / Bethesda RFC), and Sam Earl-Jones (Coleg Llandrillo / Colwyn Bay RFC) have played very well during this second Regional Age Grade block of games, and it is just reward that they have made the National training squad. They still have a fair bit of work to do make selection for the 6 Nations Festival in April, but they are determined young men, and I've no doubt they'll make their case during training this week."

Principality Premiership Round-up

Bedwas ticked the first box in a massive three weeks, in their bid to beat the dreaded drop in the Principality Premiership, as they banked the full five points in a 36-28 home win over Neath.

The five-point triumph lifted the Bridge Field side out of the bottom four by two clear points on a weekend when, crucially, both Llanelli and Cross Keys emerged pointless.

Man of the match Joe Scrivens ended the game with a 16-point haul. He notched his first three to level early on, after Jordan Rees opened the scoring for Neath with a penalty.

Swansea’s Phil Jones put the boot into Cross Keys' hopes of Premiership survival as he snatched what would have been a priceless losing bonus-point away from them with an 85th-minute penalty at St Helen's.

That extended Swansea's lead to 13-5 and meant the relegation-threatened Gwent side left with nothing to show for their efforts. Keys led for 26 minutes, thanks to a Leon Andrews try just before half-time, but then paid a heavy price for losing a second player to a yellow card at the death.

Steff Williams gave the Whites a 10th-minute lead with a penalty, before Owain Leonard was the first of the visiting players to take a 10-minute break. Andrews then gave Keys the lead with a well worked-try out wide, after two driving line-outs had been held short.

Swansea hit the front once again at the start of the final quarter, when Jones made the break and centre Joe Thomas stole the glory with a try at the posts. Jones kicked the conversion and then added the coup de grâce at the death, with Keys’ lock Tom Lampard in the bin.

Swansea now look safe with a 22 points cushion between themselves and the four automatic relegation places. Keys are still very much in the dog-fight, three off the bottom.

After back-to-back bonus-point wins over Carmarthen Quins and Bargoed, Llanelli lost their way after a great start at Newport, and left with nothing in a 31-10 defeat.

Llanelli drew first blood with a 3rd-minute try from Kalum Evans, after centre Ryan Davies had made the initial burst before passing to the full-back. Wing Tom Prydie added the conversion.

Home full-back Hadyn Simons replied for Newport moments later, converted by fly-half Matt O'Brien, before a Prydie penalty edged Llanelli back in front following a deliberate knock on. Inside centre Tom Pascoe then put the hosts ahead for the first time on 20 minutes, crashing over for a try under the posts after a quick ball from a line-out with O'Brien converting.

Simons touched down for a stylish third try - and second for him - after O'Brien's grubber kick on 32 minutes, superbly keeping the ball in play and touching down in the corner.

Newport then wrapped up five minutes before the break by right wing Andrew Evans, finishing off after being sent clear by outside centre Chay Smith. O'Brien added the extras for a 26-10 lead at the turnaround.

That was the way it stayed until Josh Reid touched down for a fifth Newport try in the dying moments of the second period after good work from fellow replacement Geraint Watkins. It was again converted by O'Brien.

Supporters Club 03.02.19

On Sunday 17th February we made our way to Newport on the supporters coach. Here’s what Steve Williams from the Supporters Club had to say about the trip:

"Sunday morning and an early start on a busy supporters bus. We made our way to Rodney Parade for our game against Newport. After a stop in Hereford, we arrived at the stadium and were invited into the Bisley Lounge by the very welcoming staff.

After being joined by other RGC fans, we headed out to the stand to take our seats ready to enjoy the game. Unfortunately, after 15 minutes, 5 points adrift and down to 14 men for the rest of the game, it was a case of damage limitation. Or so we thought...

The effort the lads put in was immense - both in defence and attack. Despite being down to 13 for the last 10 minutes, they held out for a bonus point win.

It was definitely an ‘I was there’ kind of day. And to see what resembled a battlefield at the final whistle with players collapsing on the field, you realise the commitment and effort they had all put in.

The noise from our travelling support was non-stop, creating an atmosphere few clubs can match.

Impossible job of the day?

Picking the man of the match!

A top 4 finish?

Maybe.

A team improvement?

Definitely!”

Best Game

Has to be my first game I played at for RGC against Dragons at home, was a real highlight of my career.

Funniest Story

The funniest story I have is one day I was out the house early, and this was when I was lived with Ross Davies and Shaun O’Rourke, but when I got home I was shocked to see that Ross was fully dressed in my clothes that I left on my bed. I asked him to take them off, but he refused and didn’t want to use his own clothes. So to get revenge I decided I would wear all his rugby kit for training that evening.

Best memory you have

My best memory of RGC, even though I didn’t play, has to be winning the National Cup final. Great day for the players and the fans.

Looking back what does your time RGC mean to you

RGC means a lot to me as the 2 years I was there I made very good friends, and we became a big family, and that meant a great deal to me, and will always be close to me.
