Aberavon Wizards 32 RGC 14

Saturday 1st April 2024

The home side had better of possession and the territory in the opening 20 minutes, which was assisted by the Gogs handling errors and penalty numbers racking up.

Wizards took advantage with 2 tries from Rhodri Cole and Andrew Waite, extras from the boot of Aled Thomas. Both scores came after they got close to the line and then a short pick and go saw them over the whitewash.

The Gogs tried to get some possession play but it was all extremely scrappy in the attack.

Wizards went close with and Andrewa try but a great scramble defence from Matt Buchanan ended the attack.

As the rain started to fall heavier, the Aberavon pack started to dominate and they had 3 strong scrums to build the pressure on the RGC defence.

Try number 3 arrived on 33 minutes after centre Joe Gage once again ran a good line before the ball found winger Jay Baker to cross the whitewash. This time Thomas couldn’t add the conversion.

RGC answered back at a crucial time, as they finally moved the ball with pace before wingers Matt Buchanan and Rhys Tudor combined for Tudor to score. Dion Jones kicked the extras.

As the clock ticked down to halftime RGC's Sam Williams jackled well to get the penalty and scrum-half Efan Jones took a quick tap to break down the field. With the defence open the Wizard's Jon Philips deliberately knocked on and was shown the yellow card.

Dion Jones kicked the penalty to bring his side back in the game as they headed to the changing room at the break.

RGC looked to start the half with tempo having the man advantage and had some good possession and territory but couldn’t capitalise.

The Wizards were the ones to get a score on the board with a Thomas penalty.

RGC did close the gap when Matt Buchanan burst through the field and found space to go in at the corner.  Dion Jones edged the extras wide.

Both sides looked for the next score, and RGC needed to be show patience with ball in hand but couldn’t find that crucial score to change the narrative of game.

Efan Jones and Dion Jones both looked to spark an attack with quick tap penalties to race down the field.

The game slowed with a number of scrum resets, and the game was put out of reach with a Wizards penalty from Thomas.

In the final minutes, the bonus try was claimed by Aberavon after they broke down the wing and some clever offloads gave winger Andrews the score.  Thomas was again on point with the conversion.
