U16s: Narrow Defeat at Dragons

U16s: Narrow Defeat at Dragons 4 Sep 2018

RGC U.16s 17 Dragons South 16s 19

On a glorious late Summers afternoon in South Wales the RGC Under 16 squad came agonisingly close to a 1st win in this seasons Regional Grade Championship. Things didn't look good for the young Gogs when they fell behind to a converted try after only 4 minutes but they gradually eased their way back into the game and their efforts were rewarded under 10 minutes later when left wing Toby-Reece Slawson slid in at the corner following a superb off-load from skipper Cai Herdman. However despite having further scoring chances of their own it was the Dragons who went into half-time with a 19 points to 5 lead, having crossed the whitewash twice more.

The RGC youngsters started off the second-half very much on the front foot and only 5 minutes into it inside centre, Siencyn Metcalfe scored a superb individual try when having broken the Dragons line he then sidestepped their full-back to touch down under the posts. ( Jamie Jones adding the extras.) With only 10 minutes to go a dropped pass within the Dragons 22 was snapped up by replacement scrum-half Rhys Cernyw who crossed over at the side of the posts. Unfortunately the conversion was missed and although the visitors had a number of chances to score again, the Dragons held out for a narrow win.

In spite of the loss, speaking after the game, RGC forward coach Gwyndaf Davies remained upbeat, ' To lose so narrowly, having squandered a number of scoring opportunities is frustrating for all of us, both players and coaches alike. However this was definitely a big step-up performance wise from our game against the Scarlets East side last Sunday and I was particularly pleased to see that all the hard-work we have put in to improve our line-out paid dividends. There are still a number of areas that we need to focus on but all 23 players who represented the region today can be proud of their performance.'
