U16s Academy Update

U16s Academy Update 30 Apr 2019

U16s didn’t end the season the way they wanted versus Scotland Reds, but can take plenty of positives from a week of rugby that included wins against Connacht and Scotland Greens

RGC Under 16s 0-67 Scotland Reds

22nd April 2019

RGC 16s did not end their season in the way that they would have wanted when they suffered with a comprehensive defeat at the hands of the Scotland Red Under 16 side. Having themselves achieved a big win a couple of days earlier, against the Scotland Under 16s Green Team, the young Gogs went into this game full of confidence.

However after a bright opening couple of minutes they were to concede their first try after 4 minutes and in all honesty from then on it was pretty well 1 way traffic with the RGC side unable to cope with the hard-running of the 2 Red second-rowers who continually broke through their gain-line. The half-time score was 24-0 to the visitors and by the time the referee had blown his whistle the final time this had grown to 67 points to nil.

Speaking after the game Head Coach Gav Hodgkinson was keen to emphasise that the result should not overshadow what had been a very successful season for the 16s,

' It is obviously hugely disappointing for the players and Coaches for us to finish the season with such a big loss. Fair play to the Scotland Red team who outplayed us in every aspect of the game and were fully deserving of such a big win. Speaking to our players after the game, they were to their credit very honest, saying they had been overconfident prior to the game kicking-off and that when it did start their heads soon dropped. I have no doubt that they will all learn massively from this and come back next season as better players. They have had a great season, being competitive throughout the Regional Age Grade Competition, and performing well only this week against Connacht and Scotland Greens. It is important that this season not be judged just on one result.'
