Saturday Night Lights Win Against Steelmen 9 Oct 2021

RGC 17 Ebbw Vale 13

Saturday 9th October 2021

RGC have been looking for an 80-minute performance and they stood up Ebbw Vale in the second half to send the 1127 Parc Eirias crowd home happy on Saturday Night.

Both sides started the game trying to get a foothold in the match, but it was Ebbw Vale that took the lead with a penalty from Lewis K Williams.

RGC started to play the ball through the backline, with some quick hands but couldn't penetrate the defence of the visitors. Conditions were wet so again the boot was being utilised by both sides as they looked for territory.

Williams missed a penalty before finding his range again to extend his sided lead to 6 points after 25 minutes.

The Centre pairing of Rhys Williams and Danny Cross was looking lively at times, as they looked to find a gap and break the gainline. They were having more of the ball even if the scoreboard was against them.

Sam Rogers was coping well with the kick pressure and managed to clear the lines on a number of occasions.  Evan Lloyd couldn't find the target with a penalty chance and it was similar for Ebbw Vale when Williams hit the post with another penalty attempt.

Both sides looked for that injection of pace, but the play was slow around the scrum at times. RGC got some points on the board with a big boot from Lloyd as his penalty went over to make it 3-6.

Just before halftime, RGC got the Eirias fans cheering with a well-worked try.  The Lineout went to the front which caught the Steelmem cold and Brodie Coghlan finished the move with the score.  Lloyd added the extras to make it 10-6 at the break.

It was the visitors that had the upper hand at the start of the second half, with the pressure building on the RGC line, but they kept their discipline at key times and managed to keep Ebbw Vale out.

The workaround the tackle area from Dan Owen and Sam Williams was a huge plus for RGC, as the Ebbw Vale attack was unable to get going.

It was a repeat pattern of Ebbw Vale on the attack and RGC managing to clear the lines, but they struggled to get any possesion so the pressure was back on the defence.

The Steelmens intention was clear, as they looked to the pack to cause the damage but when the ball went wide Ebbw Vale failed to find hands and knocked on.

Ebbw Vale managed to get over the line for a try, after the bodies and ball went under the posts and Williams had a simple penalty to make the score 10-13

That sparked RGC into action and a break opened up the Ebbw Vale line, which gave them a chance to build an attack.  The pack that had been working hard in defence then showed its attacking strength as they powered over for the try and Lloyd converted for a 4 point lead.

Ebbw Vale were straight on the attack and had a number of chances to build towards the tryline, but again some strong defence was stopping them.  RGC's Pedr Jones was yellow carded, which was adding to the pressure. The visitors got over the line but RGC were awarded the penalty and cleared. The boot of Lloyd was giving some relief to the players and supporters alike.

Even with 14 men RGC covered the ground to give Ebbw Vale no space and the bodies were put in front and under the ball during the final 10 minutes.

At the key times, RGC were composed and the frustrations were being felt by the visitors, and the error count started to build up.

It was nervous watching at times, it was exciting at times and it was the first win of the season. RGC will take this performance to Pontypridd next week and look to build on it.
