Merthyr 31 RGC 24 Friday 27th December 2019 Merthyr raced to a 14 point lead after 12 minutes with tries from Adam Thomas and Craig Locke with the boot of Matthew Jarvis on target. RGC were looking to play with tempo but guilty of forcing the pass at times Dan Owen sparked an attack with a 40 yard break with Efan Jones in support. Jack Perkins was yellow carded in stopping the run. Wth Merthyr down to men, RGC took advantage and create the space to set up Delwyn Jones to score. McBryde added the extras to close the gap to 4 points. Crucially the Ironmen were able to regain the ball from the restart and work for the penalty. They took the decision to go for the catch and drive. Craig Locke went over for his 2nd try and Jarvis converted. RGC were trying to find some space but the Ironemen defended well. Afon Bagshaw went close after his grubber kick bounced to the line but it ended with a knock on. The Ironmen claimed the bonus point try in the 42 minute when Jack Perkins crossed the whitewash and Jarvis again hit the conversion. Merthyrs pack were putting the squeeze on the RGC forwards, and the pace of the game dropped as a result. Credit to RGC who regained composure and made some inroads into the Merthyr 22. They worked some good ball with Bagshaw carrying well. The driving maul began to cause some problems and 2 quick tries got them back into the game. Replacements Jordan Jones and Mei Parry touching down with McBryde kicking the extras. Crucially Merthyr hit a penalty to extend the lead to 31-24 which took the game away from the visitors. Pinches was yellow carded for Merthyr with 8 minutes remaining but RGC were unable to get over the line for the vital score, and come away with a losing bonus point.
