Ceri Jones Awaits the Cardiff Challenge

Ceri Jones Awaits the Cardiff Challenge 16 Sep 2021

RGC head to Cardiff on Saturday, as rugby returns.

RGC start the new Indigo Premiership Cup campaign with a testing away trip to Cardiff on Saturday. Ironically this was the last fixture planned, before the covid induced break back in March 2020. So this game has been a long time coming.

It is a new format with the cup and  RGC will play 5 teams from the East – Newport, Cardiff, Ebbw Vale, and Pontypridd and Merthyr.

After such a long pause in competitive rugby, it feels like a fresh start especially with a number of new faces in the coaching set-up in North Wales.  It's 2 games on the road before a home fixture against Newport on Saturday 2nd October.

New Head Coach Ceri Jones is excited to get started  “It has been such a long break, so we are all pleased to get underway.  We have trained well, and of course the boys have a couple of new systems to get used to as well.

Cardiff will be a tough opener, and we know what they will offer. Morgan Allan is a powerful runner and upfront they will be strong with props like Olly Drake. When you look at the structure of the new cup format, all the sides in the east will be confrontational and direct upfront, and that physical challenge will be a huge test for us.

From a coaching perspective I’m 2 weeks into the role, and as a group we will start to see the behaviours created in training transfer onto the pitch on a Saturday, as we look to develop the plan.  Selection wise we are waiting to see how a couple of boys are injury-wise and will see if they are good to play.”
