Cardiff Edge Win 23 Oct 2021

RGC 8 Cardiff 15

Saturday 23rd October 2021

Head Coach Ceri Jones took plenty of positives from the Cardiff defeat at Parc Eirias “We head into the week off being able to assess where we are, and we have made huge improvements. We are growing as a group and when you think we have 6 senior players to come back to add that experience.

In the past 2 weeks we have had a couple of decisions that have not gone in our favour, and it has cost us.

We have to look at it as 1. We are in the battle and we put ourselves in the position to win, and 2. We need to convert that winning position into a result."

RGC started brightly and took a 8-nil lead with a try from winger Keiron Dixon who raced down the corner.  Dion Jones added a penalty minutes later.

Cardiff started to make inroads with some pressure on the RGC line, but some good defence from Sam Williams and Dan Owen were proving a barrier to the line.

That pressure reaped some rewards when Ben Murphy went over to close the gap to 3 points at halftime.

Cardiff opened the 2nd half brightly with some phase play testing RGC. They missed a penalty to draw level.

They looked like they were in the corner but were tackled into the touch.  Bryn Jones made a great turnover to break the Cardiff attack.  The maul defence was on form as well, and Cardiff were being frustrated.

The visitors try did come when Sam Moore went over, before Maynard hit the conversion.

Beetham extended the lead with a huge penalty to make it 17-8.

Credit to the Gogs as they looked to fight back and worked some good ball into the Cardiff half.  The ball was moved wide and had an overlap with Baghaw making the pass to Rhys Tudor as the try looked on before Cardiff’s Beetham knocked on.  It looked like he intentionally knock-on, but the penalty try wasn’t given. To add to the confusion he was was yellow carded.

Sam Rogers was held up on the line, and RGC went close in the final seconds but Brodie Coghlan couldn’t get the ball down.

It was another result that came down to small margins and referee decisions, but the progress is clear to see.
