Head Coach Ceri Jones knows his side will have plenty to work on after the defeat to Caldy.
“It had a typical pre-season game feel to it, with both sides making mistakes. We did a lot of things right and had good endeavour for much of the game. We had 3 penalty chances and didn’t opt to kick, and we did score a couple of good tries.
It will be a big 2 weeks for us, and I will be getting my teeth into that set-piece. We will be looking at the defence and our attacking work from broken field . As a group we will be working hard before that opening game at Cardiff.”
Caldy started on the front foot putting RGC under pressure, and were rewarded with a penalty. Callum Bennett hit the first points of the game.
The penalty count was going in the visitors' favour and that gave Caldy the platform to build some phases.
RGC were working hard without the ball, and were managing to keep them out with some good defence
The game became a kicking contest with both teams swapping kicks for a long passage.
RGC finally made the breakthrough when Harri Evans broke the defensive line to run in. Sam Rogers added the conversion.
Confidence was building in the backline, and going through some phases. Those phases earned RGC another score when the quick feet of Zach Clow stepped between tackles and touched down. Extras were added by Rogers.
RGC failed to build on that good momentum as Caldy’s scrum began to crank up a gear. It was no surprise when they then scored from a driving maul.
It became a 1-point game just before halftime when Caldy went wide and Hayes touched down and made it 14-13 at the break.
The 2nd half was extremely stop/start with the penalty count interrupting any play. Dion Jones and Tom Hughes tried to work some space with line breaks from the RGC half.
Caldy took the lead with a Ben Jones penalty, which turned out to be the last score.
Set piece misfired which meant RGC struggled to make any inroads into the game.
Rhys Williams made an impact with some strong runs with ball in hand, which got the crowd making some noise.
RGC were given a couple of opportunities with a few penalties and opted to kick to touch, but couldn’t take advantage from the lineout and left a few tries on the pitch.
The game ended with RGC on the attack, but the final whistle caught up with them.
