Monday 3rd January 2022

RGC started 2022 with a bonus point victory at Llanelli, with Dion Jones picking up 21 points in the 41-8 win.

After 3 weeks of no rugby, RGC wasted no time to score. They backed themselves with a couple of driving mauls and Rhodri King claimed the try in the 5th minute. Dion Jones claimed the conversion.

Both sides looked to run the ball and play wide but a few handling errors ended the attacks.

Johnny Lewis was linking up play for Llanelli, but the RGC defence was proving strong. Pedr Jones was working well around the breakdown area.

The Gogs extended their lead after they carried well, with Dan Owen making some yards before Rhys Tudor ran down the wing and took a tackle and slid over for the try. Dion Jones again hit the extras.

Dion Jones boot was on form again with a long-range penalty that sailed over the posts.

Llew Smith looked to make a break, but Andrew Williams made a great tackle and came away with a penalty for his side.

Restarts were working well for RGC, and it meant the homeside couldn’t gain much momentum or foothold in the game

The RGC pack were winning the battle as well, and they won another penalty which Dion Jones successfully kicked to make it a 15-point lead.  The away side were taking their chances when they became available.

RGC had 9 players out, but they did not look under-strength which was a credit to the players on the pitch

It was a quick start for RGC, with Dan Owen powering over for the try before Dion Jones kicked the conversion.

Llanelli’s error count was on the up, which was down to some good pressure from RGC, especially around the kicking game.

The game was opening up, with some good hands from RGC to make space.  Clow set up Dion Jones for the bonus point try and he added the extras,

The visitors were clinical when they had a chance, which was the big factor in the winning performance.

Man of the match Rhys Tudor was next to make a run before he has finally stopped.

The homeside were trying to create something, and Lewis made a superb break from his own half, but his pass couldn’t find any Llanelli hands.

Try number 5 was started from a lineout before the ball was shifted to the other touchline, and Zach Clow did the rest. The winger showed some pace before he stepped inside to touch down. The boot of Jones again hit the conversion and keep his 100% success rate.

RGC were finding runners at every opportunity, especially as Llanelli gave some easy ball to the visitors. Jessie Williams and Dan Owen both stretch the visitor’s defence to get them into the visitors 22.

Rhys Roberts was held up on the line after another maul powered forward from RGC.

The pace of the game began to take its toll on Llanelli as the game opened up and RGC again attacked with pace. Replacements Sam Stoddard and Tommy Ellis combined with another Gogs attack.

RGC will now focus on the re-arranged cup tie against Pontypridd next week and build on this performance.
